This is a great speed light and a must have in any amature or pro bag! Complete control of light output in Automatic or program mode... and, a built in camera bracket! A word of Caution for DSLR users... This unit can produce a trigger voltage of up to 190 V...! Nikon and Canon users need to use a remote trigger such as a Neewer 16 Channel Wireless Remote FM Flash Speedlite Radio Trigger ($15 here on Ebay)! If you find one of these, buy it...! The head not only tilts, it swivels too. You can bounce light of anything (look for camera mounted remote censors for this too, it allows you to put the flash anywhere and still have the right level of light... The Sunpak 522 is one of the best flash units I have ever used.
This flash unit is packed with features to please the professional and yet easy enough for amateurs to use. It's flexibility works well for close-up work and has the power to deliver exceptional performance with telephoto lenses even without the optional filters.

Big, bulky and heavy-A great old flash-Perfect exposures in auto mode.
I've been using the Sunpak Auto 522 for over 35 years. By today's standards it's big, bulky and heavy. But, it still produces perfect flash exposures. It is built very well and I've only needed to replace the sync cable after all these years. Also, you must use a voltage protector since the flash voltage is approximately 190 volts. This will probably damage the new DSLR flash circuit if you connect the PC cord directly to a straight through hot shoe adapter. On auto setting it performs almost as well as the newer TTL flashes. No need to upgrade since I know how this flash performs after all these years. I recently bought a second one as a back-up and to use as a fill-in using the Sunpak Slave unit. What a bargain. These are terrific and powerful flash units. With good quality AA NiMH ... I've been using the Sunpak Auto 522 for over 35 years. By today's standards it's big, bulky and heavy. But, it still produces perfect flash exposures. It is built very well and I've only needed to replace the sync cable after all these years. The recycle time is quick with fresh batteries and will slowly deteriorate as they become discharged. This is more than adequate unless you have an all day photo shoot. I haven't found the need to buy the A/C adapter or professional high voltage battery pack. I enjoy using it, but it does get heavy when mounted together with the camera on the bracket. Few things have survived the test of time as well as this flash unit. It's outlasted most of my original 35mm camera equipment and has found a place in the digital age even though the technology is decades old. The flexibility of how the head rotates and tilts reflects the superior engineering and design of the unit. Looks like my grand kids might get to enjoy using it.

It is not light weight but I am very familiar with this product and it works well for me.
For my needs it is very handy. Technology has passed it by but having a optional light source is very valuable.
