If I had to sum it up in three words, I'd choose --- "It does work."
I can't really call it a dud, but compared to any other "general communications receiver" it's the caboose of the train. Nothing really bad stands out, but nothing really good does either. Very lightweight, all plastic construction; if there's a piece of metal in it I don't know where it is. The first thing that surprises you upon picking it up is its "air weight," and the fact that from the photos, you expected the receiver to be larger.... it's really quite small and compact. Performance wise, it's not terribly sensitive. A perfectly readable - but weak - signal on my Kenwood TS-440s is static on the DX-394. For those with experience on Radio Shack HF receivers, this one is par. You really can't review this receiver unless you have experience with other brands. The audio is quite ... The audio is quite "tinny" --- another Radio Shaft characteristic, and there's not a lot of volume before the cabinet vibrates into an unintended speaker and distortion occurs. I like the choice of using a dual-antenna; you can use the standard SO-239 for band-resonant 50-75-ohm coaxial antennas, or you can simply plug a random wire into the "Hi-Z" antenna terminal. In fact, the Hi-Z terminal is a wire clip connection. There seems to be no difference in using a high-impedance wire v. a 50-ohm band-resonant antenna. The receiver also covers SSB/CW in addition to the expect AM, and there is a built-in narrow CW filter. Stability is not bad. Any drift is unnoticeable; especially on the broadband AM. I bought my DX-394 new in the early 90's and have had it since. A year or so after getting it I re-aligned it in an attempt to improve performance, and was surprised at how far off resonance the factory setup was. I also performed several after-market mods which I forget the purpose now, save one ---- to stop the irritating "beep" each time the VFO changed frequency one khz. Oh! I also pulled the tuning knob and packed it with lead weights to give tuning a "weighted feel." Controls are few. Besides the mandatory on/off, volume and tuning knob, you have a clarifier and RF gain control. No IF shifts, notch, dual-VFO's etc. Very basic stuff. If you can get one of these receivers for a low price, I can't argue the point. Unfortunately, the used prices are ridiculously high. For the same money, you can get a used, better-performing, communications receiver. I think the receiver is popular because of its looks! It DOES look very handsome. If the performance matched the looks, this would be one bad machine. That's about it.

Basic General SW Receiver
If you are looking for a basic General coverage SW receiver, this is an economical starter radio. simple to operate, receives well. I will pass this on to my grandson so he can start listening to world-wide broadcasts.

Radio Shacks last good HF Receiver DX-394
It looks like a scanner, but it works quite well, great on voice, RTTY. Downside Display is dim, but is good if well lit from above. I also wish it had a metal cabinet. I am very pleased.c .
