This is the first screen version of Bram Stoker's famous tale based on the smash hit stage production. Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi) arrives in London and immediately works to enrapture and transform into vampires young Lucy Weston (Frances Dade) and her friend Mina Seward (Helen Chandler). After he succeeds in turning Lucy, and Mina's health suddenly deteriorates, Mina's father (Herbert Bunston), calls in a specialist, Professor Abraham Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan). Van Helsing quickly recognizes Dracula's vampirism, and sets about saving Mina (and in the process, becomes Dracula's archenemy). The film, arguably the most influential of the legend's film versions, launched Lugosi's career in horror movies and forever invited vampires across Hollywood's threshold.

Another PERFECT Reissue
Like the "Frankenstein" 70th Anniversary Edition, Universal pays homage to another of it's most famous film incarnations. Again, this has been totally remastered and boasts a second disc loaded with extras. Lugosi's breakthrough film is even more memorable due to the fact he did not speak English very well and had to study methodically and he has managed like his rival Karloff to create one of great monsters in the annals of film. The movie does not have many special effects and due to censorship laws, many scenes were left to the imagination. Dwight Frye as his insane assistant Renfield is superb and his characterization has been mimicked many times in film over the years. The only drawback to this classic is Lugosi originally appeared in the stage version then ... This is a minor flaw and does not hurt the film. Tod Browning's fine direction has made this one of the great classic films of all time in this genre. The supporting cast, David Manners, et. al., give overstated performances at times, typical of the period. This only enhances the classic feel of this great film. You can find over versions of this film, but none equal this fine transfer. Highly recommended.

Dracula 75th Anniversary
This remastered 2 disc set really brings the film to life. It brings a visual clarity that even the movie fans of the 1930's could never experience. I really enjoyed the extra features of this 2 disc set. The Spanish version is a nice contrast in directing styles. In reality the spanish language version is visually superior. The Universal Horror documentary chapter of disc 2, is so well presented that it could be a stand alone feature on it's own. I highly recommend this set for any and all Dracula fans.This remastered 2 disc set really brings the film to life.
