September 1942. The German Army has advanced to the gates of Stalingrad. The Russian Army holds on desperately. It is so poorly equipped that every pair of soldiers is given a single rifle--the second man only gets the weapon when the first is cut down. Trapped in no man's land between the opposing armies, Russian recruit Vassili Zaitsev (Jude Law) finally acquires a rifle from Political Officer Danilov (Joseph Fiennes). Danilov is astonished when Zaitsev picks off several German officers. On their return to the Russian lines, Danilov writes about Zaitsev's exploits in the army newspaper. Zaitsev is assigned to a sniper unit. He kills more German officers and, thanks to Danilov, becomes a hero. In retaliation, the Germans bring in sharpshooter Major König (Ed Harris) from Berlin--to hunt Zaitsev. The two snipers engage in a desperate duel, as the appalling Battle of Stalingrad rages.In ENEMY AT THE GATES, director Jean-Jacques Annaud uses a palate of dull greens, blues, and greys to tell the powerful, true story of Russian sniper Vassili Zaitsev. Enemy At The Gates
Historic fiction is becoming a fact of our movies and TV "documentaries". But, this movie has enough accuracy to be intriguing. The background of the battle of Stalingrad is the premise of Enemy At the Gates. The movie focuses on a few characters who represent the struggle between Soviet troops charged with defending their leader's city, and the Nazi's intent on winning the city for Hitler's hope to humiliate Josef Stalin by "taking" the city named after Stalin. The dramatic scenes at the beginning of this movie reminded me a tiny bit of Looking for Private Ryan when the troops land on the beaches at D-Day. The Enemy at the city's gates is a palpable fear in this movie. One sympathizes with the Soviets who have to be desperate enough to win till there is no one left standing. ... One really gains an understanding of the weariness of the Germans, and the endurant strength of the Soviets. An interesting twist emerges out of the months long battle. The German officers are being killed by a Russian sniper amidst all the other carnage of the city under heavy siege. When the Germans send their own sniper into the city, the movie really heats up and there's good viewer's suspense. troops has a lot of battle accuracy. I liked the actors despite one lead is British ( Jude Law ) and the other is American. I disliked the ethnic stereotypes of the Germans but especially the Soviet troops. If you're Russian, you sense the stupidity of a few of the scenes or the glaring lack of authentic Russian speaker role actors. However, I loved that the cinematography is compelling, the images are memorable, and the story moves along quickly. Never a boring moment. I saw this movie in the theatre when it first came out, and since I had never forgotten it, I bought it for an incredibly cheap price ( less than 1 dollar ) on ebay.

In 1942, the German forces have invaded The Soviet Union and every Soviet resource is utilized to repell them in this epic battle. Most of "Enemy at the Gates" is based on fact and is told from the Soviet viewpoint - which adds to the movie's appeal. Very interesting NTSC VHS movie (2002 release) about the Battle of Stalingrad. The special effect and props deserve a 5 star rating. I'd suggest that this be watched at about the same time as the movie "Stalingrad" to obtain the maximum enjoyment. Absolutely not recommended for children.
