About this product

Product Information

"[Greene] develops one fresh new insight after another...In the great tradition of physicists writing for the masses, The Elegant Universe sets a standard that will be hard to beat." --George Johnson, The New York Times Book Review In a rare blend of scientific insight and writing as elegant as the theories it explains, Brian Greene, one of the world's leading string theorists, peels away the layers of mystery surrounding string theory to reveal a universe that consists of 11 dimensions where the fabric of space tears and repairs itself, and all matter-from the smallest quarks to the most gargantuan supernovas-is generated by the vibrations of microscopically tiny loops of energy. Green uses everything from an amusement park ride to ants on a garden hose to illustrate the beautiful yet bizarre realities that modern physics is unveiling.    Dazzling in its brilliance, unprecedented in its ability to both illuminate and entertain, The Elegant Universe is a tour de force of science writing-a delightful, lucid voyage through modern physics that brings us closer than ever to understanding how the universe works.

"The Elegant Universeis compulsively readable.... Greene threatens to do for string theory what Stephen Hawking did for black holes."  -New York "[An] important book.... The Elegant Universepresents the ideas and aspirations-and some of the characters-of string theory with clarity and charm."  -Scientific American "As good as it gets.... [A] thrilling ride through a lovely landscape."  -Los Angeles Times "[Greene] writes with poetic eloquence and style.... [He] does an admirable job of translating a wholly mathematical endeavor into visual terms."  -The Washington Post Book World "[Greene's metaphors oftten provide beauty and power.... The Elegant Universeis a rewarding read."  -Discovery Magazine "String theory is the hottest idea to emerge in physics since Stephen Hawking gazed into a black hole.... [Greene] explain[s] it in terms that anyone can understand."  -San Francisco Chronicle

    Great Science of Discoveries

Brain Greene's writing is very exciting and easy to understand. He has a good sense of humor and knows his stuff as a top Physicist today. ALL his books are great reads.

  • GREAT BOOK!!

Brian Green is an amazing author! He has a way of describing mathematical concepts without using math that is unparalleled. Even though he wrote this book prior to Fabric of the Cosmos, I would recommend reading that book first. It gives you a solid foundation of the history of physics, and this book is a great followup read on string theory. I would recommend Elegant Universe to anyone interested in contemporary physics.

  • An Excellent Guide to 20/21st C. Physics If You Have Some Background

Green has an excellent way of explaining math and science to the non-physicist. I do have some background, but there is a lot to digest in the book, so I am taking it slow and allowing everything to sink in. For instance, he finally clarified for me why general and special relativity are irreconcileable. He also provides a thorough background on the history of twentieth century physics. The book does get more technical as he progresses through the material. String theory may or may not be the Theory Of Everything, but this book is a good guide to the past and present state of physics if you have an interest and some background.

  • Amazing

I have read many books on relativity, quantum mechanics and string theory, but never have I read a book about all three of these subjects, at least, not until this book. The first part of the book deals with relativity and has some of the best explanations I have ever read. In the shorter middle section, quantum mechanics is discussed and gives a good but not too lengthy description of its weirdness. The third section merges these two theories together in what could turn out to be the grand theory; strings. Unless you know something of these theories, you can't begin to appreciate the grandness of the universe. This book tells it all, and, by the way, with no math!

  • Greatest Cosmology book!!!

Brian Greene begins by explaining the simplified concepts of both theories of relativity, and even gives a bit of background on electromagnetism. The remainder of the book is an elucidation of super-string theory, or now popularly referred to as M-theory because of brilliant Physicist Ed Whitton. Greene explains the concepts so well that even general readers are motivated to study more into the fields. This book is a MUST READ for people interested in Cosmology, Astronomy, particle Physics, and Astrophysics. The corresponding NOVA documentary is even an even better, and simpler, elucidation of the concepts presented in the book. HIGHLY RECOMMEND, and MUST READ!!!
