Synopsis
Written in China over two thousand years ago, Sun Tzu's The Art of War provides the first known attempt to formulate a rational basis for the planning and conduct of military operations. These wise, aphoristic essays contain principles acted upon by such twentieth-century Chinese generals as Mao Tse Tung. Samuel Griffith offers a much-needed translation of this classic which makes it even more relevant to the modern world. Including an explanatory introduction and selected commentaries on the work, this edition makes Sun Tzu's timeless classic extremely accessible to modern readers., Like Machiavelli's The Prince and the Japanese Book of Five Rings , Sun Tzu's The Art of War is as timely for business people today as it was for military strategists in ancient China. Written in China more than 2,000 years ago, Sun Tzu's classic The Art of War is the first known study of the planning and conduct of military operations. These terse, aphoristic essays are unsurpassed in comprehensiveness and depth of understanding, examining not only battlefield maneuvers, but also relevant economic, political, and psychological factors. Indeed, the precepts outlined by Sun Tzu regularly applied outside the realm of military theory. It is read avidly by Japanese businessmen and was touted in the movie Wall Street as the corporate raider's bible. Providing a much-needed translation of this classic, Samuel Griffith has made this powerful and unique work even more relevant to the modern world. • Read it, learn it, practice it... your life might depend on it soon.

It's not just for business management anymore. Many people have suggested that the concepts presented in Sun Tzu's classic writings are useful to business and that is true. Unfortunately we are facing a time when the potential for something more ominous is looking over the horizon and it's a good idea to understand the concepts of conflict and how to best defend your family, property and liberty. I would strongly suggest you add this book to your inventory right next to canned beans, water purification tablets and 2 way radios. Some things are obvious but anyone can learn something from this book.

  • I wouldn't recommend this book, there are better books out there.

Over-rated. Too many times, the author of the book doesn't make any concrete advice under a given situation. Btw. Gen. Griffth's comment at the end included too many false conjectures. His claim that KMT should have not gone to Manchuria is total bs. That's one KMT did right, if KMT had given up Manchuria, then they might as well have given up all of China since CCP would have inherited Japanese trained troops of at least 250,000 to 500,000 plus air bases, and indurstrial bases for building a new modernized red army for operations against KMT plus immediate open border right next to Soviet Far Easter Military for even more aid. Better get 'On War' by Klauswitz, or one by Moltke, no mumbo jumbo there.

  • A masterpiece. A Philosophy of War and Life

This book is truly astonishing in it's grace. Beautifully written. It flows like poetry. Deception is a tool referenced many times in this Classical Text. I'm a christian and do not like so much deception, but Deception has played a big part in winning many wars. This book is rich in cultural and historical facts of the far east. (some are embellishments). Some War Tactics discussed include traversing difficult terrain. Knowing when to fight and when to flee. How to ambush your enemy. How to scare the enemy. How to spy on the enemy. How to turn the enemy against itself. How to hire the enemy. Getting the enemy to surrender. Disgracing the enemy and countless other tactics of war still used today. I believe war should be a last resort especially hearing some of the brutality that went ...
