The third of Jill Paton Walsh's continuation of Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsy stories takes the story to the early 1950s, with frequent flashbacks to the 1920s. It shows us the early shellshocked Lord Peter tackling his first mystery in the twenties, which turns out to have repercussions that continue through the second world war and onwards. The central McGuffin of the story is the main stone of the necklace of the title, which turns out to be much more than it appears. As with the previous stories the period detail feels authentic but the characterisation of Wimsey, Harriet, Bunter etc. falls into the trap of trying to touch too many bases, and the plot (involving copies of the stone, mysterious Indians, etc.) is the sort of thing that was already going out of fashion when Sayers began writing. Having said that, I think that its homage to Sayers works reasonably well, and it's a fun read for her fans.Read full review
