I had played this game several years ago, so when my won won a PS2 at a raffle, this is one of the games I wanted to get. However, by this time the game was hard to find. I was lucky to find a great copy on eBay, and it's been a lot of fun! The game is rated T (I'm guessing for violence), but there's not a lot of blood and gore. When you defeat other pirates or monsters, they disappear into the ground. There is some mild alcohol reference (you get healed by finding mugs of grog), but nothing too over the top. I'd think the game would be appropriate for kids s young as 10. In this game, you are Katarina, daughter to the governor of the islands. After your father is killed by Hawk, an evil Pirate who is more than he seems, you begin a quest do recover your Pirate mother's vault of treasure and defeat Hawk. The game consists of two parts, sailing and sea battling and island exploration. As you sail from island to island, you meet Hawk's men in ships and in forts on various islands. Using the cannons on your boat you can attack and sink Hawk's ships and re-take the forts. In the island exploration, Black Kat fights a variety of monsters and men while finding useful items to help her quest. I really enjoy the difference of the sailing and island exploration parts of the game. The sea battles are fun without being overly complex. The fighting is pretty standard controls for most PS2 games. While you fight, you build up power that you can unleash in multi-attacks, which comes in handy against tough creatures. The graphics are very good. Not the best I've seen, but very good. The one negative I can think of is that it does get slightly repetitive at times. However, the islands and inhabitants are different enough from section to section, that you always have new challenges to face. All in all, Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat is a great game for adults and early teens.Read full review
This game is unique in two ways: 1) It uses a woman as the player's character - a heroine named Katarina - "Kat" for short, hence the title "Legend of the Black Kat". "Black" in this case, refers to her clothing and pirate flag. Kat herself is Spanish. 2) It has two modes of play: land-based with Kat, and sea-based, in which you control Kat's ship. Both modes are very well done. Control schemes are well thought out and easy to use. Responsiveness is accurate, prompt & natural. There are many different characters in this game, and get this: they were voiced by real human actors. See the writeup in "imdb" for details. Really adds a lot of richness to the game! This is a mostly "open world" game. You are not locked into a linear progression. You can go back and forth among the game's many settings as you wish. The theme is that one mean, powerful character kills Kat's kindly father and, with his many "minions", takes control and oppresses the people of the islands. Kat sets out to free the people by progressively defeating the minions, building up her resources, weapons, ship, capabilities and ... information. Various well done cutscenes expand the story and reveal secrets Kat needs and can use. The ultimate goal, of course, is to defeat the big boss himself. Through the course of the game, you develop your skills and learn various strategies you will need later on. As with any good adventure game, you explore, collecting money (gold coins & jewels) which you use to upgrade your ship (even buy bigger ships), buy ammunition, health boosts, etc. The game features many islands you must visit. BUT... you need maps to get to them, and you must find those in the course of gameplay. Each new map piece gives you access to yet another island. The map pieces are placed to lead you to progressively more challenging islands. Each island is unique, with it's own climate, theme, treasures, enemies & challenges. They get more challenging as you progress. Each includes some kind of Boss battle. This is one of the most intrigueing, varied, engaging and enjoyable adventure games I have ever found. Many hours of fun, discovery and adventure. The developers did an outstanding job with this.Read full review

Let me start with what I don't like. The character is a girl. That is all. I wanted something more along the lines of Sid Meier's Pirates, but this game is the closest thing I've found for the playstation. You fight on land and sea. You have to find stuff. You can get weapon and ship upgrades. Some of the monsters are pretty cool also. The screaming ghost scared the heck out of me the first time I saw it. Buy this game.
One of the greatest games that we played long ago and lost. So glad we found it. Greatly satisfied with our purchase
