Synopsis
Former member of the Vandal Squad - a New York police unit devised to protect the subway from hardcore crime and vandalism - Joseph Rivera recounts the days and nights spent in pursuit of the city's most notorious vandals. As the only book on graffiti told from the side of the law, it gives the reader new perspective on the fast-paced cat and mouse tales, presented alongside professional disregard within the department. Featuring unseen images and stories of graffiti's infamous Top 40, this is an unprecendented look at graffiti from the other side of the game.

    • An interesting story concerning an urban blight.

This is an interesting and informative story about what and how the ugly defacement of much of New York City's Transit facilities and trains was combated. Although the Vandal Squad arrested perpetrators caught in the act after the damage was done, it took a foreign company to invent and find a way to apply graffiti resistant paint to eliminate most of the scourge.

    • A glimpse into NYC history when graffiti artists (vandals to some) risked everything to express their art, and the cops who were sworn to stop them.

Fans of police work, or fans of Graffiti art will enjoy this "behind the scenes" look at the cat and mouse game between law enforcement, and those who chose to express themselves (illegally) throughout the NYC transit system in the 1980's and 90's. An easy read, Joe Rivera takes you through some of his experiences as an NYPD transit officer on the hunt for graffiti artists/vandals. He relates some of the methods he (and other officers) used to catch and convict the illegal artists. As a person who actually grew up in the "culture" I recommend this book.
