Rugged TRD Skid Plate - OEM
This is an original manufacturer part. You will not subtract value from your vehicle by installing it. It looks good for a skid plate and should perform well (prevent underside engine damage) in service. However, the red TRD letters are actually snapped on plastic pieces, not an enamel or paint. They will likely get scraped off from brush and/or rocks. Intallation was simple on my 2019 TRD Offroad Premium 4Runner, only four bolts on the new part. It did take a bit of wiggling and fiddling to get the holes lined up; the tolerances of matching vehicle holes to skid plate bolts was probably a couple of millimeters off.This is an original manufacturer part. OEM for the win on this one. High quality aluminum skidplate that fits perfectly in existing holes in frame, no drilling required. However, you will find it hard to turn the bolts unless you clean out the hole with a M10 x 1.25 tap and die set. The holes are open at the top and get filed with oily grime that will make it very difficult to insert the bolts all the way. A quick run with the tap and it cleans the threads right out and makes it easy to twist the supplied bolts in by hand before torquing them down. I found out about this on a 4Runner forum and it definitely makes the install a LOT easier,OEM for the win on this one. Awesome upgrade
I installed this on a 14 FJ Cruiser and it looks amazing. Instructions were clear and installation was easy - rear bolts will give you some grief as they are longer than original. This is a heavy, thick skid plate and is powder coated silver. It even looks better than I expected. Toyota OEM - great part. A bit pricey but really feels worth it.

It's much heftier than I had imagined. Maybe not up to par with some steel offerings, but a vast improvement over stock. Some people bash this because it's made of aluminum, but if I ever hit something and this skid got so badly damaged I had to replace it, I'd be more worried about structural damage to the truck or other parts breaking. I'm sure the skid plate will outlast the mounting bolts. For the FJ Cruiser, it is a very easy OEM fit. Just remove the old factory skid plate (attached with two bolts), remove two additional bolts, then bolt the new skid into place using four bolts (two captive and an additional two included). Add a little anti-seize just in case. The hardest part of the installation was removing the factory skid. It unbolts then swings out. Due to the slight ... It's much heftier than I had imagined. Due to the slight slope of my driveway, the factory skid couldn't swing far out enough to unhinge and remove it. So I had to jack up the front of the FJ slightly to give it more clearance. The tires were still on the ground; I only had to go about 2in up on the front passenger side using the factory jack. One thing I noticed is that it seems to sit slightly lower than the stock skid plate. It may just be an illusion, being a brighter color (light silver vs black). It is heavier than the factory skid, but not that much. The major downside is that this skid will have to be removed when changing the oil filter. It doesn't swing out like the factory skid; it will have to be removed completely. So before an oil change, I have to remove this prior to going to the dealer. Because I don't trust the factory certified technicians at my local Toyota dealer when it comes to aftermarket parts, even if it is made by Toyota/TRD. Installation going solo and using only hand tools took me about an hour, and most of that time was figuring out the best way to unhinge the factory skid plate. I think if I had to do it again it would only take about 15min.

Ready to take your mall crawler to the next level, then look no further than a Toyota TRD skid plate. Instructions will tell you to use longer supplied 14mm bolts. You can but the shorter stock ones are plenty long enough. Easy to install and looks great. Will not hold up if using for serious off roading, but then again who does right?
