  • Bleak but Entertaining

This film is entertaining in bleak sort of way. The plot of the film concerns a gay ghetto liquor store clerk and his awkward friendship (and crush) with illegal immigrants. It is director Gus Van Sant's directorial debut. The film was made on what is generously called a "micro budget". Yet it establishes his penchant for his heroes being societies most unfortunate beings. In this case, homosexuals and illegal immigrants. He also throws in old, slightly crazy street folks. While on an extremely low budget, the film manages to be entertaining. It is shot with a lot of close frames. It is in black and white. Yet he manages to capture and maintain the viewers interest. But, as I said, it is bleak.

  • Classic Gus

Gus Van Sant’s first real feature film. Made for only 20,000 dollars, but looks like a priceless art film. Essential viewing for indie film fans who enjoy black-and-white.
