A small-town Texas family led by matriarch Peggy Ingram (Rue McClanahan) is rocked by the arrival of Bitsy Mae Harling (Oliva Newton John), a bar singer who has recently been released from prison. Elsewhere, Peggy's daughters (Ann Walker, Bonnie Bedelia) continue to be a source of anxiety, while her son (Leslie Jordan) schemes to escape from a mental institution whose staff believes they can cure him of his homosexuality.
