10-CD box set contains nine operas from 1949-51, recorded under the direction of and supervised by Bridget D'Oyly Carte and conducted by Isidore Godfrey. Also included is the ballet "Pineapple Poll," arranged by a young Charles Mackerras and set exclusively to the music of Sir Arthur Sullivan. This also features two bonus orchestral selections from "HMS Pinafore" and "The Yeoman Of The Guard" and the overture to "Di Ballo!" Each CD has been packaged in an attractively designed slip case complete with track listings and running times and the complete set is housed in a CD size "lift off lid" box, together with full notes on the stories of all the operas.

Speedyhen is consistent at providing sometimes difficult to find albums, and get them delivered extremely quick at a reasonable price. I ordered this Friday and it arrived Monday. It was packed securely and exactly as described by seller. I’ve purchased from Speedyhen multiple times with no issues now, and I’ll continue to purchase from them in the future.

First time buying from this seller. I actually tried to cancel the order as it hadn't shipped yet and I was afraid it wouldn't arrive on time. However the seller declined and shipped it to me quickly. I arrived just in time. Album was just as pictured and described. It arrived undamaged and was professionally packaged. Very happy with my purchase. Great communication from the seller. 5 Stars!

  • Outstanding transfers of Martyn Green's D'Oyly Carte recordings from 1949 to 1951

More than 20 years ago, bothered by the lack of compact disc issues of the post-war monaural Gilbert and Sullivan recordings, I wrote to London Records, asking them to transfer those recordings to compact discs (receiving no reply). Since then, I have made do with the original LPs. No more! This set is just about everything I could have hoped for: bright, clean sound without the noise inherent in most old vinyl. The recordings, even those from 1949 originally recorded on 78s, have never sounded better. Martyn Green has never sounded better. Is it perfect? Not totally. It is in monaural, but with the ambience and clarity available from the FFRR process at its best. The cuts in the original recordings, perforce, have not been restored. Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, recorded after ...

  • Splendid, simply splendid!

Again, this is a splendid box set of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta. It is by D'Oyly Cart which is a major plus. It is made from semi historic recordings with a better than new sound quality and is a major twelve and a half hour listening experience if you like to devote a special day to the joy of this wonderful music. My complaint? The individual discs do not have the meta data name of operetta being played imbeded in it. Since some discs have a complete opera plus part of another on them one really needs a better way to keep track your place in the performance.

  • Description left out one important detail

Yes, this is the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, yes it is the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, but................One detail left off the descriptions and that is these are not the recordings of the 60's and 70's, these are from the 40's. Great price and a good redo but is from mostly different singers than I remember.
