This item was sold to me as a cord/cordless shaver which implies it can be used either way. This is not true, it needs to be plugged into an AC outlet to work. I was very disappointed and when I did use it, it pulled hair out. It did give a reasonably close shave but I haven't used it again. Much better shave than the older model that preceded it. Also quieter and faster.
