For foiling, pretty much any inexpensive iron will do. What this iron excels at is soldering lead came; too hot an iron will destroy the joint. One can dial in temperatures as needed for the solder alloy used. Two picky points about this iron: the first is that this iron is underpowered for laying bead on large foil projects, even at its highest setting. Use a larger iron, in spite of marketing claims. The second is that the tip supplied is fine for foil, but too small for lead, especially 3/8” and wider. A wider tip must be used, at additional expense. I use 1/4” tip but wish wider ones were available (1/2” would be sweet). I hope the Hakko folks read this.

This soldering iron can bring a lot of heat to the point of contact, for working on multi-layer boards that usually sink that heat away too quickly for SMT re-work. But, with this thermal adjustment, it's not too hot. The weight of the iron is very light... you don't have to muscle it around when you need to do delicate work. The tip is not too large to work on many of the board mounted components. I am able to get just the right temperature where I need it. If you stock a traveling kit, this could be the one iron that fits all.

I'm very happy with my Hakko FX 601 Adjustable Temperature Control Soldering iron. It heats up quickly and it's a great option to be able to adjust the temperature depending on the job! The 3/16" tip is big enough to work on stained glass but also small enough to do finer work. I would recommend this soldering iron. This is the fourth soldering iron I've bought and I like it the best.

I purchased this Hakko 601 soldering iron to replace the 600 I had used so much it finally wore out! Outstanding iron for use in making stained glass. The temperature control is excellent.

When I wasn’t going to receive my package on time I was notified given a gift for the trouble. Which was no problem at all with a little bit of patience and trust the store sent one as soon as they could which was faster than I thought. Thank you
