This movie is wonderful-so realistic that I was carried back into that time, those streets, those homes. It is not trying to dazzle us just with lots of Roman unifroms, horses, and pageantry. It doesn't have the hallmark of a Hollywood epic, with lots of pancake makeup and stilted acting. Yet it lacks none of those things. It does leisurely get us to know an amazingly good Jesus in Robert Powell, his family, the Apostles and their sheer amazement at how their life changed for ever once they met him. It has unbelivably realistic cinematography. I have seen all the movies about the life of Jesus and this was the very best, by far! Even though it is not "about Jesus himself" as "The Visual Bible:Mathhew" is, but "about the life of Jesus", it gave me a wide view and feeling about the place, the atmosphere of that time; best use of the big Hollywood budget. In a sense, it is as if it uses a wide-angle lens, whereas "The Visual Bible:Mathhew" uses a narrow-angle lens focused on Jesus.Read full review
We have sen this movie before, in our home and bought a second copy to give to someone. And, decided to watch it again! And, frankly, having read and studied the bible well, find this movie not just entertaining but very uplifting! This production doesn't display the special effects which today's films do, but it's strength lies in its focus- and it's focus is the loving ministry of the Saviour! But it isn't special effects which make this film so endearing... it's the actors and the scenic background of an ancient land which give it the moxie of it's passion! I enjoyed the scenic landscape. It's geography was a real plus and looked so very timely... deserts, mountains & hills, the fig trees and other trees, panoramic in every sense. The character portrayals come from seasoned actors and actresses whose abilities are definite and courageous, defining the boundaries of human endurance and beyond! Don't watch this movie to affirm or deny doctrine... approach it with an open mind and let your heart be softened and receptive to God's Spirit!Read full review
This is Franco Zeffirelli's Masterpiece and by far the best movie ever made. The original expanded version shown in Italy is longer but more inclusive of the gospels. Nonetheless this abbreviated version is great with excellent acting, directing, and true the history scenery. It is the most inspirational drama I ever watched. It is must watch movie for Passion Tide - Easter.

What I love about this movie more than most, is the multi-dimensional aspect of the storytelling. Even Herod and his possible motives are fleshed out. I bought this movie for my two home-schooled middle-school children who are learning about the Bible in a practical sense for the first time. I want them to see the New Testament as real history, not ethereal stories, and this movie fits the bill. The characters are genuine, a realistic mixture of righteous desire and human failure. In spite of minor doctrinal misconceptions, (i.e., John the Baptist would not have sprinkled water on the heads of his followers; the word "baptize" literally means "to plunge or dip." He certainly would have submerged those coming to him to be redeemed), overall this movie is quite true to the gospels. A moving depiction of the life, times and death of Our Lord.Read full review
