I don't care what the haters have to say about this album, or any other one for that matter. No it is not Metallica's best work but if you were to take the name of the band off the front, you would remove all of the preconceptions of what it "should" be. I think the album is good. The music is heavy and James was sharing some of his personal angst. They were conforming to metal of the late 1990's to mid 2000's by keeping it dirty and no wailing guitar solos. Having watched the documentary and seeing the changes the guys were going through at that time I do not condemn them for this album. NO it is not Puppets, Ride or Justice, but you have to look at the few other metal bands that are still around from the 1980's (megadeath, slayer, ect.), their offerings that have been made in the last decade have not done well. That thrash metal sound is tired. It has joined the ranks of "classic". The reason Metallica STILL sells out large arena on a regular basis is because their sound has matured as they have and they were able to keep themselves relevant to new generations of listeners. Music is fluid. The Beatles first album sounds nothing like their last one. The bands who stay the same die, or they are relegated to touring the country playing the same old tired greatest hits album. Look at the stones, steve miller band, megadeth, zepplin, elivs. None of them (when still alive for some...) still produce relevant new music. Metallica still kicks butt.Read full review

While LOAD and its sequel RELOAD, Metallica's final studio offerings of the '90s, found the band expanding their approach in what fans called "maturation" and detractors called "mellowing out," the band's first album of the 21st century is a powerful retrenchment and call-to-arms for the heavy metal faithful. Not since the bygone days of MASTER OF PUPPETS (and perhaps not even then) has Metallica sounded this furiously unrelenting. There's virtually no letup from the frenetic musical mayhem of the appropriately titled ST. ANGER, and nary a power ballad in sight, as the guitars blare and drums rage from one gut-assaulting tune into the next at a breakneck pace. One is reminded of the pure sonic fury of vintage Motorhead, the only band before Metallica to convincingly combine metal tonalities with punk energy. The brilliantly clear production is a blessing that maximizes every bone-crunching riff and jackhammer drum hit for an intensified sucker-punch that will leave even longtime fans reeling with the sheer heaviness of it all. ST. ANGER is surely one of the most effective metal albums of the early '00s, and a bracing lesson for all the nu-metal brats on how it's meant to be done.Read full review
The hate for this album is unfounded. Sure, the clanging drum is annoying, but it’s not bad when you play it loud through good speakers. The riffs are awesome. St Anger at least has the audacity to sound different than what came before. Check it out. And turn it up!
