About this product

Product Information

The first hockey game for the 8-bit NES is now available for Game Boy Color with Konami's NHL Blades of Steel 2000. Features include multiple modes of play, updated teams and rosters, and the official licensing of the NHL.

Controls are similar to other sports games for the Game Boy Color, utilizing the directional pad and then combinations of the A and B buttons to initiate slap shots, passes, body checks, bursts of speed, and punches during fights.

Practice Mode gives users a chance to hone up on their fighting skills or practice penalty shots, both against computer-controlled opponents. After mastering these skills, Exhibition Mode allows for users to battle the computer in a single, customizable game, or battle human opponents with the use of a link cable. Any one of the 28 NHL teams can be selected, as well as two All-Star teams.

The final play options are Season Mode and the Playoffs. Season Mode simulates an 82-game season, complete with trades, injuries, and an All-Star game in Toronto. Selecting a Randomized Season allows users to create their own players as additions to their favorite team. When creating a player, users are given 200 attribute points to assign to four different areas: stick, speed, glove, and stamina.

Selecting the Playoffs Mode bypasses the regular season and skips right to best-of-seven tournaments, starting with the conference quarterfinal and progressing to the ultimate battle, the Stanley Cup Finals.

Within each mode of play, users have many customizable game options. Player fatigue, which causes players to get tired and requires the user to complete line changes, can be turned on or off. Also, users can choose whether or not to control the goalie when he doesn't have the puck.

Finally, three game speed settings are available: slow, normal, and fast. Both the Season and Playoff Modes can be saved in addition to created players, who also can be transferred between Game Boy Color systems by using the infrared port.

Strap on your skates and hit the ice with NHL BLADES OF STEEL. Play with or against all of the teams in the NHL in the Exhibition mode, where you can get your bearings and learn winning tactics. Then, put those tactics to the test in the Season mode and try to win the Stanley Cup. If you don’t like the ups and downs of Season play, go straight to the Playoffs. And when your friends question your dominance in the rink, go after them in the Two-Player link cable option. If the game ends in a tie, you will have to try to win it all in a shootout. No matter what mode you play, you must win the fights because if you lose, you go to the box. However, you can use the Practice mode to work on your fighting skills as well as your shootout technique. Will you be able to handle the action of NHL ...
