The production of these Midsomer Murders is really very good: The plots are vastly better than Agatha Christie ones, much more complex and risque, with loads of characters and therefore suspects, and usually more than a single murder to complicate each story line. Actor Nettles is excellent as the understated lead inspector, and the casting of so many long-term British actors and actresses in supporting and guest spots is always fun. The lovely scenery and sets are top notch, using lots of different angles to make the buildings, pathways, streets, and woods look original from story to story. The degree of humor, suspense, and horror is just the right mix, without the gore found in so many films and series. The often-used classic red sportster is even fun to look for in each film. As owner ... One of the BEST British murder mysteries out there. This set is apparently the first four seasons. They are well written stories, Kudos to Caroline Graham the author, and whoever writes the screenplays. Many shows are too predictable and you can guess whodunit, but these are so complex and have so many layers and twists and turns that it's so great to watch how it unfolds. I love John Nettles, Chief Inspector Barnaby, he is great. I also have watched the set, Series 9,10,11,12 &13 with John Nettles and Jason Hughes Sgt. Ben Jones and they are great team as well. British Murder Mysteries better than modern American Murder Mysteries.
Not cheap entertainment. Either in price or quality. As the viewer you have to pay close attention. You won't be able to keep up with the twists and turns if you have outside distractions. This is the TV viewing that sucks you in. You become apart of the sceen. You watch intently at the mystery unfolds. When it's over I'm left with a feeling of 'where have all the good American writers gone'. I love American shows from the 60s-70s and 80s. I can't take modern American shows anymore about Alien abductions and 'the beautiful people'. I now watch British shows. I get more out of them. This is first rate. There are many series to this show. Buying the Early Cases as a boxed set makes the best value. But I did find that the glue on the boxes come apart ... Not cheap entertainment. Either in price or quality. As the viewer you have to pay close attention. You won't be able to keep up with the twists and turns if you have outside distractions.
