Classic Tom Baker Doctor Who, in a not so classic production.
On the one side, Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor. His opponent, the Sontaran Empire. They never had a chance. As for the producers of this story, they didn't fend as well. What started out as a transition from one arc to another, left the feeling of filler behind. It just wasn't as substantial as the previous productions. Enjoyable as always, but not as satisfying. Luckily it had a nice featurette in extras. On the one side, Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor. His opponent, the Sontaran Empire. They never had a chance. A Quick Jaunt into the Whoniverse
First aired in 1975, The Sontaran Experiment is a serial that features the return of one of the rather popular villains from Doctor Who: The Sontarans (of course). Aired in the first year of Tom Baker's time as the fourth iteration of the Doctor, this little two-part adventure (a first for the franchise) features the Doctor examining a long-since-abandoned Planet Earth. But not all is well, as a Sontaran and a band of astronauts prevent the planet from being completely barren - and this Sontaran is preparing for invasion! When it comes down to the story, this serial isn't one of Doctor Who's best. The story is a solid one with great writing, but the abbreviated length and the lack of a solid threat (invading an abandoned planet, for example?) just wind up leaving some ... It's not helped that this opens directly from the previous story and leads almost directly into the next story (the infamous Genesis of the Daleks). This does wind up leaving the story feeling a bit like filler - however enjoyable the filler is. As I mentioned before, the writing is rather solid overall. Tom Baker is still new as the doctor, but his acting winds up coming off as if he had played the role for years by that point. Elizabeth Sladen is also wonderful as Sarah Jane Smith, and the Sontaran Styre is a rather interesting twist on the Sontaran enemy that I don't think we've seen since in the franchise. The extras for this are a touch spartan, but in this case, that's understandable. To compensate for only having 50 minutes worth of Doctor Who to watch, we also get a 39-minute long look back on the Sontarans' apperances in the old Doctor Who series. This includes all of their appearances, and even includes interviews with Colin Baker (the sixth actor to play the Doctor, obviously not even in this main feature) and other crew who worked on those episodes. Of course, we also get the traditional audio commentary, this time hosted by Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane) and co-writer Bob Baker with producer Philip Hinchcliffe. In the end, this is one of those releases where I've got to wonder why it was released onto DVD before other Who stories. However, it's cheap (I found it for about $12 USD brand-new) and the extras it contains make up for that somewhat. If you enjoy the Sontarans (and I do, frankly), then it belongs in your library. If not, at least it's a nice little adventure with the Fourth Doctor.

This episode was meant to be a 2 parter. A visit to earth far in the future---what do you think you would find? Some other intelligent being finding the only other rock capable of sustaining life in this entire solar system, and they find apelike creatures and need to test intelligence. The Doctor has a pretty bad day. The commentary provides a whole layer of richness of what the actors went through filming the episode. Tom Baker broke bones while on camera. It's a fantastic addition to TB Who collection. Sontarans were always a favorite of mine.This episode was meant to be a 2 parter. I have to admit that I'm biased when it comes to the Doctor. I've been a huge fan since I first encountered him on the Chicago PBS channel, WTTW, in the mid-70's. It was the first episode of Inferno with the Doctor appearing in his Jon Pertwee persona. I was already in my 20's at the time, but something about the show captured my imagination from the get-go. The change to Tom Baker's Doctor took me by surprize, not yet fully appreciating the make-up of a Time Lord. But by the time this adventure aired, I already loved the Doctor's new regeneration. This is a short and simple tale, the Doctor along with Sarah Jane and the hapless Harry Sullivan encountering a Sontaran advance scout. It does serve to illustrate an interesting point that hadn't ... I have to admit that I'm biased when it comes to the Doctor.
