Every believer should own a copy of the Tanakh. I have paralled it with the Holy Bible KJV, and found some omissions in the Old Testament. I have started reading the Tanakh instead of the King James Old Testament. The Jewish people and the Jewish Publication Society have painstakingly, and with great sacrifices throughout history to keep every single word of God intact. I am thankful to them for having this text in its completion. I highly recommend this book. The Tanakh is easier to comprehend than some versions of the Holy Bible. It has been well translated from the Hebrew. Buy me!
An official translation (1985 by a group with authority) it has some helpful definitions and of course a TOC, it is notably "clean" and notably unusually very easily readable. An index (ideally with great detail) would make it a better reference work, were one included.

I have from a leatheret edition of the JPS and it was from Mission Impossible, looking at it caused it to fall apart. This hardbound JPS holds up pretty good.
