After their new Jeep conks out on a desolate stretch of Arizona highway, a well-heeled Massachusetts couple accepts the help of a polite and seemingly honest trucker (J.T. Walsh), who drives the wife (Kathleen Quinlan) to a diner while the husband (Kurt Russell) stays behind to "protect" the vehicle. After saying goodbye, the husband gets two surprises--the Jeep starts, and his wife never actually arrived at the diner. What's more, the trucker doesn't recollect having picked her up at all. This taut suspense film, directed by Jonathan Mostow, is light on special-effects bombasticism and heavy on the old-fashioned Hitchcockian chills.

As a 1st time watcher...
...of this film, I recommend this to other first time watchers. Exciting drama that is caused by a breakdown out in a death valley where only sand and sun hits the face. I found myself excited by the motives of the husband who did exactly what I would do in such a situation. These bandits hold the wife hostage in an emblem of mystery for the husband and his only contact to the bandits is by phone. The bandits wanted to secure an undisclosed amount of money from this family's bank account. Husband was daring in solving the problem. Pure rush of action drama awaits 1st timers. 2nd watch through of this film you know what happens next, so it takes the anticipation out. By reading this review, hopefully I didn't spoil those who haven't watched yet....of this film, I recommend this to other first time watchers. I wanted the movie and could only find it on vhs. It worked fine, so I'm happy. I would have preferred finding it on DVD, but no luck with that. I still watch VHS from time to time and I'm a movie novice.

Okay so this movie reminds me of why it is a bad idea to breakdown in the middle of nowhere. The sad thing is, this movie doesn't seem too far fetched. It really could happen.
