A truly great fully-manual lens for my Pentax D-SLR.
I bought this lens for use on my K10D and my wife's K20D. A wide variety of K-series film lenses will fit the Pentax digital cameras---a great reason for buying a Pentax! The Ka-series lenses have the electrical contacts. But this is a K-series, so it has no electrical contacts. This means you need to go fully manual in metering. As a film photographer, I prefer going fully manual anyway, and these Pentax digital SLR cameras allow for this. This is a specialized lens, and is not generally available for digital cameras, yet. I was told a Nikon shift/tilt film lens goes for over $2500. So, this was a bargain at $500, even though it does not tilt (it only shifts). This lens is even more manual than usual. When you press the shutter button, most cameras have a function to "stop down" ... I bought this lens for use on my K10D and my wife's K20D. When you press the shutter button, most cameras have a function to "stop down" the lens to the actual lens opening, while it flips the mirror up, before it trips the shutter. This is so you have a bright picture in the view finder with which to compose and focus. This lens, because of the shift mechanism, does not automatically stop-down the lens. So, you need to set your desired f-stop on both the camera and lens. There are two f-stop rings on the lens. One is a guide for the other. So, you set the guide ring to the desired f-stop, compose and focus the picture, manually stop down the lens with the second ring, then trigger the shutter. It sounds more complicated than it really is. Forget to do the second ring, and you will get a blank white photograph. No problem, erase that shot, do the second ring and shoot again. This lens is top notch professional quality. Even with today's computerized equipment at the factories, you really won't get a sharper lens. It was designed and manufactured for the most demanding photographers. The drawback with this lens, is that you really need to use a tripod and cable release, because of all the manual setup steps. However, if you are doing perspective control photography, you'll likely be on a tripod anyway---especially to keep the "film plane" plumb. It is quite a bit heavier than a stock-standard 28mm, but if you're carrying a tripod, a few more ounces won't hurt you. The perspective control on this lens is a bit less than it would be on a film camera. The 28mm works out to about 35mm or so on a digital camera. Any film tilt/shift lens will be lessened on digital, so this is not a drawback on this particular lens. Some digital post-processing software can mimic the perspective control of tilt/shift lenses. However, the resulting image is either compressed at one area and/or stretched in another. The result is that you lose image information. It is always the best route to compose the shot as best as possible in the camera, and minimize post-processing. This lens is a step in that philosophy. Also, by combining a tilt/shift lens with post-processing softare, you can capture images that are not possible with one technique alone. The bottom line: Pentax D-SLR's allow you to use old professional lenses that are not available for digital formats. These lenses may be too expensive to produce today. So, truly great lenses, such as this one, may never become available---and certainly not at this price!

Not just for architectural shoots
This special purpose lens is at the top of the price and quality scales for a Pentax lens and is also reasonably fast for a 28mm of this complexity. Designed to correct the distortion inherent in shooting tall buildings it is equally good at landscapes and is my favorite lens when I go to the Grand Canyon. You can also go the other way and use this lens for optical special effects and when used intelligently results are tack sharp. I like this lens so much I own 2 of them, one each for my Color and B&W bodies.This special purpose lens is at the top of the price and quality scales for a Pentax lens and is also reasonably fast for a 28mm of this complexity. Best Lense I Have Ever Used
I own one of these for my spotmatic F. It winds up on the camera more than my 50 mm f1.4 standard lense. Clarity and depth of field superb. Color trueness you will not believe. I am a better photographer because of this lense.
