Having scored critical and commercial success with the superhero-themed MMOs City of Heroes and City of Villains, Cryptic Studios once again turns to the world of comic books for another persistent world RPG in Champions Online. Earth is practically being held hostage by Doctor Destroyer, a megalomaniacal supervillain who will stop at nothing to assert his dominion over the world -- as evidenced by his 1992 obliteration of Detroit. Fortunately, humanity has Defender and The Champions on its side, but they cannot save the world by themselves, and thus gamers are enlisted to create their own superhero personas and join in the fight to protect mankind. Players choose a unique identity and select from hundreds of different costumes, accessories, body types, and superpowers, then set about fighting evil using Champions Online's action-based combat system that promises battles more akin to console games than traditional MMOs. No superhero is complete without a nemesis though, so gamers also get to design a supervillain who will bedevil them as they travel to a number of different locations, from the shining metropolis Millennium City, to the underwater realm of Lemuria.<br><br>The Best Buy exclusive includes a downloadable "Lil' Champ" which acts as an in-game pet.

Fun game not addicting
I bought this because I played City of Heroes and City of Villains and enjoyed it. This was made by the same company so I thought it would pretty much be an improved version. The character creation is amazing and you can build them from the ground up really customizing your powers to make something unique. They have already added a new powerset and instance plus they regularly patch it to fix balance issues and bugs. The downside is that because its new there isn't everything to do in game that there is with games like WoW or CoX but that should come with time. There also can be an issue with teaming, its very easy to make a character that can do everything solo so teams are not formed regularly, but that can be fixed by finding a good guild/supergroup. Amazing game but not right for me....
Pros: Amazing stylized graphics and sounds really immerse you in the game, it's awesome. Really easy to use User Interface, very slick, no need for "mods". Its a new game so everyone is low level just like you. Really in depth character generation. Lots of quests to do. Respawn rates are great. Servers dont crash. CONS: No instruction manual which is difficult when trying to update or modify your hero. Great forum support though. Extremely difficult to raise levels past 15 because all damage is done by stats not items. This makes it difficult for guys like me that like to play fantasy MMOs like WOW wear gear is what makes you awesome. Overall its an awesome game but I would recommend this to someone who likes playing with character stats, etc. I'm really disappointed in the difficulty of ... Great fun for everyone and very creative. You get your powers right off the bat and create a superhero to be reckoned with. You can go the evil looking route trying to do the right thing or go the good guy route making a righteous name for himself. The open quests are tons of fun and the rewards are worth it. Partying is a great addition as also solo is. The only thing is sometimes the lack of quests at certain levels and maybe a few other tweaks would be a gripe, but a small one at worst. Overall, I loved the game and with time it could become something even more.Great fun for everyone and very creative. You get your powers right off the bat and create a superhero to be reckoned with. Not really Champions, and kind of Disappointing...
Having played the Hero System Champions game since it first came out in the early 80s, I was somewhat disappointed with the online version. First off, other than a superhero game called Champions, there is almost no other similarity. In the paper and pencil RPG, you use character points to completely customize every aspect of your character's abilities, powers, skills and talents. These points are paid for by taking disadvantages, and earning character points. You have a long list of basic power frameworks to choose from, then you buy the powers you want, and determine what the special effect are of the particular power. For instance, my character in the offline game has an elemental control of the entire electromagnetic spectrum of energy. He has a 6D6 RKA (Ranged Killing Attack) ... There is no real story line, and no real Role Playiong. It is merely a Superhero online based shooter like all the rest of the so called MMORPGs. To make matters worse is the necessity to spend real money on this so called Free game, to acquire many of the best powers and items. This puts less financially flexible players at a distinct disadvantage. I think Hero Games would have been better off translating the actual game completely to an online version, charging a REASONABLE monthly fee and NOT charging for the things a player needs to get serious about the game. Perhaps charging a fee to players to enter certain adventures as you would buy modules for the offline game. But as it is, I really could not recommend it to a serious Champions offline player. I suppose it's fine for the hoards of online MMORPG players who just like some mindless carnage, and never ending streams of mediocre monsters and aliens to fight. To anyone else though. Don't waste your money. Get a Final Fantasy game. Or better yet, play the offline game, it's a lot more fun.

I bought this game because I love comic books & this game is just like that. I can create my own super hero easily and just the way I want. The only down side to this game, is that if you want to make a super villain to challenge your hero you'll half to get to rank 25 just to be able to make him. I know DC Universe & city of Heroes are similar to this game, but what this game has that the others lak, is the freedom to mix & match super powers to make your superhero stand out from the rest.I bought this game because I love comic books & this game is just like that.
