"Elevator Music" An Overlooked Genre
Intrumental easy-listening music of contemporary pop-tunes (1950's to 1980's) often seems to be overlooked,shunned, or sometimes even disdained. I remember when this music was played in supermarkets in the 1970's and right up through the 1980's, you could easily find a radio station that played it. Unfortunately I know of no equivalent within this genre that plays tunes from the 1990's or 2000's. Within this genre are hidden treasures including the likes of Peter Nero, Sven Libaek, and of course; the Hollyridge Strings. As I grew up, I liked the Beatles alot. An off-shoot of my liking the Beatles was to like the Hollyridge Strings as well. I find this kind of music to be soothing and relaxing. Back in the 1970's when my father would listen to a ... Well after CD had come of age (1999), I was glad to have found a small CD compilation of Hollyridge Strings early Beatle hits. Since I began bidding on E-Bay, I discovered more about the Hollyridge Strings. I learned that there were more comprehensive CD releases with latter Beatles, ex-Beatles, and non-Beatles tunes especially being a challenge to find. I've acquired various Hollyridge Strings recordings from E-Bay on the CD and 8-track formats. I have not yet heard every Beatles' tune ever recorded by the Hollyridge Strings, for as I've said, the latter pieces are more of a challenge to find. This CD was a fine addition to my collection. Inclusion of latter Beatles tunes makes it a gem among Hollyridge Strings albums. This particular CD album includes "When I'm Sixty-Four". I was amazed at how the beginning sounded so original; as if that track from the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album were being played; until it was time for the vocals to otherwise begin. Overall, I think Hollyridge Strings recordings are a great addition to any music collection.
