The Lumbee Indian tribe has lived in the coastal plain of North Carolina for centuries, and most Lumbee continue to live in rural areas of Robeson County with access to a number of healing plants and herbs used in the form of teas, poultices, and salves to treat common ailments. The first section of this book describes and documents the numerous plant and herbal remedies that the Lumbee have used for centuries and continue to use today. There are remedies for ailments relating to cancer (external and internal), the circulatory and digestive systems, the heart, hypertension and hypotension, infections and parasitic diseases, asthma, pregnancy, sprains, swellings, and muscle, skeletal and joint disorders, to name just a few. The second portion of this work records the words, recollections and wellness philosophies of living Lumbee elders, healers, and community leaders. The information presented in this book is not intended to be a substitute for the advice or treatment from a physician. The authors do not advocate self-diagnosis or self-medication, and warn that any plant substance may cause an allergic or extremely unhealthy reaction in some people.

A Must have Book of Herbal Remedies
I believe that in some cases natural remedies not only save money over time but often work better that their pricey manufactured counterparts without many of the side effects. The only downfall I have found when using other herbal remedy guides was that most call for hard to find items. Being of Lumbee decent buying this book was a no-brainer buy for me. I originally bought it primarily out of historical interest and a small hope of finding something helpful. However it was even much better than I ever expected! This book does offer an amazing glimpse into the Lumbee people but it also offers treatments using items that are easily found that really work! For example my 10 year old daughter had a toothache. I opened this book to see if there was anything I could do to help until she could be taken to the dentist. One of the recommendations listed for tooth pain was easily found in my kitchen cabinet. I grabbed a jar of minced garlic directly from my kitchen and applied it to my daughters gum below the affected tooth. It almost instantly provided relief without the tongue numbing effects of anbesol, orajel and etc. It amazed me! Now this book stays right on my shelf within easy reach at all times! As a Mom of three it is an invaluable resource! This book not only does a great justice to the Lumbee people but offers healing and help to everyone!!Read full review
