Hard light to soft dark
The Derwent graphite pencil set give the artist a great way to get the light and dark values they are needing in a realistic drawing. Pencils are not just for doodling but for creating fine art. These pencils are made from wood and not the synthetic stuff used today so they are sturdy. I’ve never had broken graphite with any of these pencils. They sharpen to a nice sharp point for details or can be rubbed down for shading. The only negative I have ever had with these is that they are not marked on all sides of the flat surfaces. I do like the hexagon shape as this prevents the pencils from rolling around. The lights are hard and the darks are soft and they are consistent going up or down the scale. These pencils are well made and a must have for the serious pencil artist who loves the ... Derwent Drawing Pencil Quality Poor
The first thing I noticed about these pencils were how light they were when taken out of the tin. Before using and rating any new drawing pencil, the second thing I do is sharpen one which tells me about the quality of the wood and graphite. On new blades, the wood splintered, and the lead was so gritty doing the gradation test on smooth paper, all this was too much. Plus, the paint job was cheap and if you want to know what grade of pencil you need, it has to be turned 180 degrees to find out. I was so distraught with these pencils, I wrote Derwent a letter and dropped it in the mail to England.
