Synopsis
The New Appalachian Trail is both the story of author Ed Garvey's rediscovery journey and a practical guide to backpacking on the AT., More than a quarter century ago Ed Garvey drew public attention to the wonders and precariousness of the Appalachian Trail with his much publicized thru-hike, so memorably documented in his Appalachian Hiker books. Twenty years later, at the age of seventy-five, he once again began the long trek northward, to rediscover a trail that had changed significantly in the intervening years. The New Appalachian Trail is both the story of his journey and a practical guide to backpacking on the AT. It is also a tribute to the unprecedented cooperative effort of government and volunteers to secure and maintain this extraordinary national treasure.

  • Famous Ed Garvey's Final Chapter

I really enjoyed this account of Ed Garvey's thru-hike attempt at age 75 and admire an active man my age who enjoys his favorite beverages of coffee and beer as much as I do. It's got humor, detail on his trail condition reports, in-depth info on his meals, and a daily record from his journal for starters. In addition, he provides considerable history of the trail's inception and growth over the years as well as his views on backpacking gear of 20-25 years ago. As a former AT corridor monitor, I found the entire content to be most interesting. For all his contributions to the ATC and PATC, there's a shelter built in his honor along the AT near Sandy Hook, MD.
