In preparation to add an end fed HF/VHF antenna, plus a mobile set up, all within a new ham's budget, th0e LDG Z-100 seemed to be the best choice. Its been able to match a 80-6m end fed to work on 160m with a very nice SWR. And, with its internal battery power supply, the transition to mobile is simple. My only challenge is with this set up is a Yaesu FT-857D. The mobile setup is remote controled to the transceiver body in the back of the car. I need to run to the trunk to trigger the matching process. I am toying with the idea of creating a remote trigger. Positive Review With Special Warnings here. Yes its a good little economical and efficient tuner, but certain radios will require manual retunes when you change bands. For instance, this unit works very well on an Alinco DX SR8/SR9 unit with the proper control cable. I know because I used it with that radio. However, I also have a Yaesu FT-891. That requires a different accessory cable. With the Yaesu, there is no automatic tuning. You have to retune every time you change bands. Period. And you have to have an independent power source and use the little power cable that comes with the unit. All of the above said, just keep in mind, with some radios it will not autotune and you will have to retune with every band change and there won't be a memory. I confirmed this with a tech at LG ... I confirmed this with a tech at LG named Kinkaid via email. Now onto the positives and negatives. Pro: cheap, compact and excellent for base, some QRP and portable operations. It tunes just about anything to your radio up to some proportional limits. The operation is simple, uncomplicated and easy once you work with it. Con: Instructions are helpful but not comprehensive. It generally tells you about the auto tuner but not about specific models. I found out, for instance, that with the Yaesu FT-891 the accessory cable was important, but you also had to get into the main menu of the radio and find the part covering the tuner and use the LAMP setting. The LAMP setting is what is used to control an external linear amplifier to help tune the amp. However, you have to manually retune every time you change bands or turn on the radio. So be aware that it is not fully automatic on some models. Moreover, the website is not clear on the issue of manual retunes, and mercifully does tell you how to set up the FT-891 to work with the tuner (but this is not in the instructions that come with the unit). To do an unaided manual tune, you have to try a low power setting, key the mike, then hold down the tune button until the tuning light turns off, then release the tuning button mike still keyed, and wait until it finds a good SWR match and lights up the green SWR light. There are limitations, however. Its dependent on how much power you drive into the tuner. Since the tuner is opened up to MARS modded radios, as an experiment, I tried to manually match a CB radio to a long wire antenna. I found it did actually tune a CB mobile radio at 4 watts out, but the CB HT unit which puts out only 2 watts would not tune. So there appears to be a 4 or 5 watt limit going in. To do a manual tune with just any radio, you have to key down on the radio and press the tune button. Zero Power Autotuner. Not exactly. If you're doing manual tuning, you need a power source. So they throw in a power cable with tinned leads and the plug. A power source 7 to 18 volts is sufficient to keep the circuit powered. There are instructions on how to add AA's or a 9 volt battery to the inside of the unit so you won't have to trifle with external power sources. So it may be zero power with some radios, but that was not the case with my Alinco or my Yaesu, both required using power. The Alinco accessory cable plugs into the back and has power going out. So that's a plus there. The Yaesu required using the supplied power cable that came with the tuner, hooked up to the 12v power source. Conclusion: Inexpensive and compact tuner that may do the trick for you. There is bigger and better out there. If you can't afford a $325 ATAS system tuner for your Yaesu or DX-SR8 or other brand radio, this tuner is an inexpensive solution. The added advantage is its less than 1/2 the price of a matched brand named tuner. It does work, but you have to make sure you know HOW it works with your radio. I like it, its very good and rugged. Its not water proofed but it survived getting banged around in the go box when I went out doing some QRP/Portable work in the desert.

Economical tuner for the Icom IC-705
Though it was listed as a parts tuner I had no difficulty in getting it to work. The unit was in great shape and once I understood its operation it has been part of my shack. I'm running it on external power and have not tested it on internal battery power. It's hooked up to my Icom IC-705 and I'm able to activate the tuner from the radio.

This tuner works with older transceivers that do not connect to automatic antenna tuners. Before hitting the tuner button you transmit a low power C/W tone and then push the tune button. Works great and I don’t have to buy a new transceiver. Thumb way up!!
