It was unavailable on compact disc until it was released as a HDCD-encoded remastered version on August 19, 2003 as part of his Archives Digital Masterpiece Series. Recorded after (but released before) Tonight's the Night, On the Beach shares some of that album's bleakness and crude production—which came as a shock to fans and critics alike, as this was the long-awaited studio follow-up to the commercially and critically successful Harvest—but also included hints pointing towards a more subtle outlook, particularly on the opener, "Walk On".

Different, but good as anything he's ever done.
Like Rolling Stone said, it's like Blood on the Tracks, with more blood on more tracks. The last album recorded in the so-called Ditch Trilogy and the second released. Lots of subject matter covered on a not long enough - for me - album (The only way to make it better would be to "ditch" the jewel cases. I Was surprised when it showed up with one, as Neil tends not to use them any more).Very heavy stuff.You must have this album.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
