    Olympus 35 IVa: Solid midcentury Quality, and a Pleasure to Handle

    For fans of midcentury 35mm cameras, this Olympus makes for some fun time in the field. Machined from a block of aluminum as were so many cameras in the 1950s, this one offers a 4-element 40mm Zuiko lens and a simple but reliable leaf shutter. There's no rangefinder, but that semi-wide angle lens offers pretty good depth of focus if you take a moment to plan your shots. No built-in light meter, either ... which is a bonus as finding a 60 year-old selenium cell that still works and is accurate is about as easy as finding a Benjamin in your garden. Follow the basic "sunny 16" exposure method ... and use a film with plenty of latitude, confining your shooting to outdoors on brighter days, and you'll be happy with the results. The 35 IVa handles well, and you quickly learn to cock the ...
