    Quite possibly the second-best DAT recorder ever made, the R500 might only be bested by its big brother, the R700. Capable of making amazing sounding tapes, the R500 is very much a machine that takes some time to learn the subtleties of operation but is well worth the learning curve. I use it to digitize some of my favorite LPs and even some of my good-sounding cassettes. The feature that sets this apart from the other DAT decks I’ve used - many Tascam models and a high-end Pioneer - is Sony’s SBM system - Super Bit Mapping, which is Designed to eek out the very last bit of musical information to make a 16 bit/48k recording sound like hi-res. It’s not as good as DSD, but it’s about as close as you can get with a DAT. I fully enjoy the tapes I’ve made with it. Once you learn the recording ...

    Very sturdy, easy to control and operate, and relatively simple to maintain. The mechanical part has 4 motors running so it is more reliable. But the digital audio interface has only coaxial input and no optical fiber input. Anyway it's very good early digital recorder,
