Higurashi no Naku Koro (When they cry) is not the best Anime I've seen but not the worst either, it's definitely worth watching if you're an Anime fan. Though it is really brutal and gory, not recommended for young viewers. The story is told in a very unique way. Instead of the usual linear method, the story is broken down into sections that highlight each characters views of a particular event. So at the start of each new arc, it's like you're starting from beginning. The primary focus of this Anime is a small town were each year at the cotton drifting festival someone is killed. It's kind of like a murder mystery type thing, there are different victims and culprits each time. As the story unfolds you'll learn why theses murders are happening and how each arc ultimately ties together, as well as the real meaning behind the towns cotton drifting festival.It's kind of hard to follow at times, but the things that didn't make since at first will be explained later (most of them anyway). This method of random story telling is impressive. I don't really know what other Anime to compare "When they cry" to since it is so unique. I've never seen anything like it, from the story to the artwork. Though, most of the reviews I read before buying compared "When they cry" to "Elfen Lied" and "Hellsing". I haven't seen "Hellsing", but "When they cry" is nothing like "Elfen Lied". I guess these comparisons were made because these are the only other popular gory Anime.Read full review

My daughter reads the manga so we wanted to get the series. This animation and storyline are remarkable. The only thing I do not like, is it really isn't the complete series. It is the complete English series, but apparently the company that does the english voice overs went out of business. I would like to get the remaining series even if it has subtitles.
