Athearn 40' Reefer kit assembly

Athearn kits are undisputidly one of the best if not the top quality for their time. As I hold it at about 80% armlength away from my eyes I cane clearly read all print with the exception of two specifications (the IW and IH) which are just a bit small, but are legible at at least 1/2 and armlength away. A knife will be need to shave off some extra plastic from the die process (rather typical). The vast majority can be removed by fingernails. The stirrup ladders are sturdy (probably a bit too big for it's proper scale but keep in mind the technology of dies in the 70s and 80s) but don't look out of proportion to the car. They are sturdy enough not to break from a decent grip of the car; same cannot be said for the latches on the ice hatches. The latches on the ice hatches can easily be popped off with an easy brush of clothing or anything else really. Exercise CAUTION when fingers are near the latches and be EXTRA vigilant with low hanging clothing (particularly the bottom of sleeves and armpits) for they can very easily pop off the latches. Recovering these are difficult if not only possible through luck/coincidence. The ice hatches however, have a stronger connection. The hatches can break off, but that would be done through a more concious/self-aware effort. If this car were to fall from a 2.5 or 3ft height onto THICK carpet, one might lose one or more of the stirrups on the bottom and probably lose some latches. Aside from the afformentioned, all other damage is repairable. If the coupler pops off, the coupler might be broken, but the cover should very well easily pop back on. Some modification might need to be made to the cover, such as widening or adjusting the side clamps to fit properly. Once the cover is popped on, one may use a small flat screwdriver (not philips head) to pinch the side of the covers inward to grasp securly around the plastic coupler pocket section of the underframe. I would recommend this practice of pinching it inward when upon testing with one's finger, the securment of the coupler by gently pressing it down towards track level. A simple down and up will suffice. Too much force will definately pop it off. The objective is to make sure the coupler will remain in a secured fashion while dealing with train forces (coupling up, slack, pivot motion of coupler). This model is another great enjoymentby Athearn. Simple, clean (lines, appearance, etc) sturdy. It does not have a cheap plastic look to it but rather a bit of an aged look to it, just slightly. I would describe the hue as a bright maize that is soft; flat finish, not glossy. Roof slide down and snaps in place. Screw go through the truck, underfram, weight and then then the body holding all of those together...no glue. Glue will only be required for the securment of the brakewheel. Glue is optional for the ice hatches and latches. There is something to be said when one can proudly state that they themselves assembled evey car on the train, as it moves on by. I give this kit a 5 out of 5. Depending on when the kit was made will be the main factor for appearance, specifially paint and print on the kit. If this kit was made in the mid-90s to the end of production of Athearn kits (those would come in the box with the Santa Fe GE's in the desert with Amtrak passing it), it may be a bit brighter and possibly crisper print (if thats possible from how great this edition/run turned out). The only cons to this kit: A) it is plastic, it can break (especially when you try) B) stirrups can be broken off (it is inherent with this. Treated with caution, nothing will break or get lost) SIDENOTE: with B mentioned, the latches can come off when car is stored in the box so be careful when taking the car out of the box to make sure first, that all latches are on, if not all accounted for. C) latches can come off (inherent with these specific cars - 40' reefers) Just be more observant than usual when handling this car and there will be decades, if not generations, of enjoyment with this kit.
