I was walking through Barnes and Noble when I saw the cover. The cover is what drew me in and it was one of the first times I picked up a book and just began reading it there for about an hour. The story line is great and art is even better!

Childrens toys coming to life with a dark twist. Plucker, the spirit doll that young Thomas' father brings him from Africa in 1942 holds a secret. Broms twisted imagining, imbues the love and imaginative play with which children grant their toys can be sucked out and turned to evil purposes, destroying the soul of the child and enlivening creatures into nightmarish monsters. Thomas' old Jack-in-the-box with the aid and herbal hoodoo wisdom of Mabelle, (the ancient old nurse), and a few other lost-under-the-bed-toys band together to prevent tragedy. Jack challenges vile Foulthings spawned by the Plucker and vanquishes its malevolence. Broms descriptive powers are revealed equally in his prose and his illustrations. His paintings so detailed and layered they yield secrets deeper the more closely they are examined. Poring over them is an exercise in fascination tempered by revulsion. Almost every page contains abominations from a dark mind meant to stir nightmares. Despite its bittersweet, triumphant ending this book will edge in and aid in your discomfort. Brom design on this is most assuredly by design as we discover the authors photo, he consumes an eviscerated teddy bear with a giant fork and spoon. This book is written and illustrated for the dark at heart..Read full review

I bought this book because I'm a Brom fan. I wasn't dissapointed. The art work is superb and really lends great visuals to the writing. The book gives a feeling of a dark fairy tale, more so of the brothers Grim dark originals, not the Disney fluff. If you're a Brom fan you couldn't ask for a better work. If you're not a fan, but are in need of a good read or just want to see some dark art, this is your book. While my opinions aren't as objective as they should be in regards to Brom, i still would recommend this to teenage and older readers.

Never heard of Brom until I was browsing through the book store. Saw The Plucker and became mesmorized by its artwork. Acquired it on eBay, and now am eagerly awaiting his other books to come out. Brom is most notebly known for his artwork, but will soon be known as an artist of the mind; as he pens a great story that plays in your imagination. Definately not for the younger kiddies, but a great story with a great moral for us adults!

Between the beautifully dark and original illustrations and well crafted story you will be sore pressed to put it down. An honest and refreshing adult bedtime story that is just the right length for an evening or afternoon. A modern work of art for sure!
If you enjoy a scary story, you will embrace Brom and his story 'the plucker'. Kind of a Toy story meets salems lot. Very engageing and well written. Dark siders should love it. NOT FOR KIDS!
Brom's "The Plucker" is a superb piece of work. The story is a real page-turner, a nightmarish journey into the world of a malevolent demon who seeks to infest the toys of young Thomas, whose only protector is his Jack-in-the-Box. Jack must escape the confines of his exile - the Underbed, where all Tom's discarded toys lay - to do battle with the Plucker and his army of Foulthings, whose aim is to take over the corporeal world... It's a great story, at once clever, original, and imaginatively written. But Brom's words are not all: To (quite literally) illustrate the tale of Tom & Jack is his fantastic artwork, a dark and creepy gallery of the Plucker's world, proving that Brom's ability with the brush is as mighty as with the pen. Combined, they provide the reader with a real feeling of menace as the story draws you in... Uniquely, each of the limited copies of "The Plucker" are not only autographed by Brom, but contain a line from the story written in his own hand and unique to each signing - in this case, "Good Evening, My Children" - together with an accompanying sketch. In all, the book is beautifully packaged in outsize format and is a magnificent addition to any collector's library, as well as being that most important of things - a terrific read.
