As expected a Criterion collection DVD of a film is always a very good transfer. Having subtitles to a Shakesperian play is always a plus. As an abreviated version of Hamlet this version works. The viewer must realize that this version has Rosencrans and Guildenstern edited out of the play. It also excizes two of Hamlet's seven soliliquies, "Oh What a rougue and Peasant Slave am I" and " How all occasions do inform against me" but I have seen a lot worse edited versions of the play.

One of the best renditions of a true classic. Sir Laurence Oliver being the great classical actor adds depth to Shakespeare's Hamlet. I collect Hamlet by different actors and find this to be my favorite. I also have Hamlet done by Mel Gibson, Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Kline. Still adding to my collection as there are many more great actors having tried there hand at Hamlet.

I bought this to use for my literature class in school. I knew an old version be appropriate for school. I recommend this version especially for teachers who want to show clips of the play. It is divided up into many sections and they are labeled by the famous quotes within their section. Very convenient.
For films like this, I use my subtitles to understand the movie better. I do recommend doing this if you decide to watch this film. It is a fast pace movie, so that's another reason to subtitle it. Awesome performances by everyone. I must say that I enjoyed it a great deal. Would recommend!
