Desperate times with Sony SVRS500
Auto set up no signal, having just removed cables from my old freeview box seemed very odd so I rearranged the cableing route amongst my DVD & Video etc and eventually got it to tune in to all available digital TV channels. Picture nice and crisp but it kept changing display format when changing channels. The sound was louder than with my freeview, not having altered the settings, so I lowered sound to our normal level. When changing channel the screen goes blank and there is a delay before next channel is displayed. The program Guide is very sparse on listing only showing now and next program on selected channels when searching. Panasonic lists the full days programs and you can go through a full weeks listings for every digital channel including radio. Fidley to edit recordings to remove ... Fidley to edit recordings to remove adverts etc, owning PANASONICs, editing is a breeze and flexible, this Sony is a real pain. Unit feels over hot. Fan permanently runs even on STANDBY, not good for electronics to work at high temperatures, this a recipe for rapid component failure. To add to this placing in a video cabinet in a stack does not improve life for this poor Sony either. Only 2 Scarts and a pair of phono stereo output sockets for external amplifier, FORGET 5.1 all together So you still need to keep your old DVD recorder to save favourite TV, films etc to disc at some time, because 80GB will fill up. Having a 400GB Panasonic is big, but it still gets full. Sony seem to be one of the very few that incorporate recording 2 seperate channels at the same time which comes in handy when you are married. This feature is brilliant and two rotating discs one inside the other appear on the front display, also recorded TV progs display their title scrolling across the display from right to left as is the norm with Sony Mini disc players and car radios etc The hard drive is set to remember the past 30 mins of a program. So if you have to go to answer the phone or to the loo you can pause TV and restart when you return so you don't miss anything. Instant record is O.K. but trying to cancel it before the preset 30 min timer has finished is very frustrating. A 4 digit code is required to Format the hard drive, you may happen to find the inf 3/4 way through the tiny multi page manual. That is if you don't rip it up first in desperation trying to locate any form of reference to it. Even then this is a factory reset code, so stick a note of your selected code on front of the unit, because you will forget it Guaranteed. The manual is long winded sending you from front to back refer to page section this page section that. Sony ! why not put all relevant inf together in one place and let the user get it working and enjoy his / her home time, instead of going insane getting your stuff set up, and having to live with the manual in their hand to effect menial operations Another thing, you have to reset record mode every time if you require LP, EP etc, it always defaults to SP. Even when you set to EP it records in SP and then has to spend 4 hours compressing the file down to EP. WHAT ! is that all about? Basically I think I love my Panasonic stuff even more now, having suffered this nonsense for 2 hours. Sorry SONY

East to operate and has 7 day EPG built in as well as the facility to record a series of programmes weekly. Quiet in operation, remote controls basic function of TV as well as the freeview tuner/recorder. Picture quality excellent. Bad points. Takes a long time to change from one channel to the other and sometimes freezes. Teletext not always available and can be VERY slow. A reasonable buy and it does the job well, but can be a little frustrating because of it's slow reaction. Quality product from a quality name, ample storage from the 80GB hard drive giving around a 100 hour of recording. Simple to set up and operate and with two tuners you can watch one programme whilst recording another. Able to plan your programmes a week in advance fantastic for when your working away or just to tired to stay up. All bought on Ebay for less than 60.00 pounds.

It's Old tech! Very slow on channel change over - slow in getting the recordings! No EPG guide to programe for a weeks viewing - no search for programme to record its a manual day to day search on its guide. Record one channel only - Well its Pants and I recommended you stay well away from it!!! Forgot the Remote is Rubbish and updates are non existants!

Our first taste of Digital TV and HDD recording. Well it works! I haven't seen a manual as we bought the item second-hand. The menus are reasonably intuitive and after a few tries at recording we think we now know how to do it. The programme guide only shows the current and next programme, I don't know why we are not getting the full guide. Takes several seconds to change channels. Maybe they all do that?
