About this product

Product Information

Produced by David Lynch, this acclaimed, often unsettling portrait of cartoonist Robert Crumb, most famous for his Zap Comix, "Keep on Truckin'" cartoon and the x-rated character Fritz the Cat, lifts the page and looks into the twisted roots of the artist's inspired lunacy. CRUMB traces the lives of underground cartoonist Robert Crumb and his extraordinarily dysfunctional family. As children, the three Crumb brothers escaped from their abusive home by indulging in an imaginative life centered on comic books, but Robert is the only one who has fashioned any sort of normal existence. Now a famous cartoonist, he creates work that revels in the darker side of the human condition, hilarious and often offensive work that is obviously influenced by his troubled upbringing.

    Outstanding but difficult to watch

Robert Crumb is a gifted illustrator, best known for his Zap Comix, copies of which I read in my college dorm room back in the sixties. This movie, released in 1994, delves into his considerable talent, creative output and fame, but it's the "backstory" of his thoroughly dysfunctional family that is so revealing. It is moving, disturbing and at times, simply painful to watch. Crumb has never made a secret of his problems and frequently used them as content for his work. In doing so, I suspect it provided an element of much needed therapy. The movie ends with Crumb and his wife Aline moving to France in the early 1990's. Since then, his catalogue has grown to include "The Book of Genesis," "Kafka," "Heroes of Blues, Jazz and Country" and other works. I've read them all and with age and the ...

  • Crumb

This documentary is about a unique artist, Robert Crumb, who gained fame in the early sixties. It gives insite into the social values of the period. Crumb's talent is that he captures the real or imagined attitude of a generation. He finds the humor and pathos in his own life among the famous and the not so famous celebrities of the era. His fetishes are exposed, not to mention his predeliction for naked woman with heavy thighs. The film shows how his early life and family influenced his attitudes and colored his work. He mixed with the drug culture, capturing their insanities and humor of the characters he meets, always turning them into his stock in trade. "Mister Natural" and "Keep On Truckin'" are still viewed today as reminders of his genius. The album ...

  • Quirky, Funny and Interesting

The art created by a person should stand on its own merit and should not necessarily be the measure of the person who created it. Such is the case with the eccentric, contradictions of Robert Crumb, who while troubling on many levels as a person, is a consummate artist. A quirky, funny and interesting biography of the artist's life.

  • So very sad

To use a play on words.....Mr. Crumb and his siblings had a very crummy life.....A brutal father and an addicted Mom.....Thus In repeat myself......a very sad life....I think Mr. Crumbs seeming indifference to his life is just a protective fasade a sort of mask to hide his pain...His honesty is like a branding iron....that burns into one's soul.....the film is dedicated to his brother Charles...who took his own life....sad sad sad!!!
