About this product

Product Information

This sensitive adaptation of John Steinbeck's coming-of-age story, "The Gift," stars Peter Miles as Tom Tiflin, a lonely young boy growing up on a farm in the Salinas Valley. His city-born father Fred (Shepperd Strudwick) has never been happy with life on the farm where his wife Alice (Myrna Loy) was born, and the two spend much time arguing. To escape the bickering, Tom seeks out ranch hand Billy Buck (Robert Mitchum), who becomes like a father to the boy.

  • A Sensitive Tearjerker with a Western Flavor

In the early 1900s California, young Tom Tiflin (Peter Miles) does not have very happy parents (Myrna Loy and Shepperd Strudwick), but he has two great friends: Billy (Robert Mitchum), who plays the farmhand on the family ranch and his grandfather (Louis Calhern), who loves to talk about bringing settlers west. And the best thing that happens to this young boy is a gift from his father, the red pony title character, Gallaban, whom Tom Tiflin dearly loves and with the help of his friend Billy tames the pony and prepares it to be ridden. This story is based on three of John ...

  • The Red Pony (2003,DVD)

My 4 year old loves cowboy stories. We saw this movie on a cable channel that shows old movies and he was fascinated. It's hard to find a good, clean language, western in the current market. The story involved and little boy on a farm, that made it even more interesting to a child. Loved It!

  • Accurate portrayal of Steinbeck's classic

The Red Pony is faithful to the novel, in large part, no doubt, because the script was written by Steinbeck. If you're looking for a realistic portrayal -here it is.
