Phalanx, a 2D side-scrolling shooter originally released in 1992 for the SNES, comes to the Game Boy Advance with you in the role of Rick Sanada, the only pilot capable of flying the A-144 fighter. Dispatched to the distant planet of Delia IV to investigate the disappearance of a research team, you become embroiled in a do-or-die conflict with an alien armada. While traversing the planet's core, an asteroid belt, deep space, and more (a total of eight levels), you utilize power-ups, such as homing and explosive missiles, energy beams, and super bombs. Other power-ups increase the damage potential of your ship's weapons and provide extra shielding.<br><br>Weapons, stored in four compartments selected via the R button, can be changed "on-the-fly" to deal with each situation. If your ship is destroyed, only the currently selected weapon is lost. Specific levels alter the standard horizontal-scrolling formula, by requiring maneuvers in strong water currents, or attacks against the exterior of a massive alien vessel before fighting your way inside. Sub-bosses populate the many levels, some of which are home to three or more of the screen-sized monstrosities.

The SNES Version Improved!
I get the feeling that Kemco took a look at the SNES release of PHALANX and decided to improve everything that weighed it down. While the audio took a hit, the graphics got a makeover (for better and for worse), the main difference being that you can now SEE the enemy projectiles! The difficulty has been toned down, so now enemies don't take so many hits before being destroyed. Your ship is now allowed FOUR hits being shot down rather than three, you can now stock four weapons instead of three too, and you are allotted three bombs. Although they don't do much damage to enemies, they do come in handy wiping out enemy fire. Story's been altered some; the main character is now Rick Sanada instead of Wink Baufield. And oh yeah, NO OLD HILLBILLY PLAYING A BANJO ON THE COVER! Overall, I think ... Graphically it is beautiful and colorful, the jouabilié is very easy, the weapons are varied, the songs are catchy (it recognizes the SNES athmospère ^ ^) A version will be available soon on Wii Ware (with improved graphics) and a Gradius elsewhere. ------------------------------------------------------ Français Moi j'adhère à 100% pour ce genre de jeu, dès lors je le recommande.
