...for the series of comics that this book is actually compiled from. However, the hype hasn't quit on the comic, and indeed the earliest issues now go for relatively big bucks for a newer comic book! So I read this book and found that it was likable... and was actually a fun read! You may like it too if you are okay with mice as being heroes; you like LOTR, Star Wars Trilogy, and the fantasy myths that are currently out there in books and films. David Petersen did a good job in writing the storyline, and the text for the characters to speak. The artwork is rather stylized, and actually fits the storytelling very well. A mainstream reader not knowing of the comic book roots to this story, may think it a very good graphic novel. The facts that this was once a comic book series are lightly touched on... I purchased this book after seeing some of its illustrations and some 3-D promo figures online, thinking it would be a lighter fairytale-like treatment of themes similar to LOTR. I was not disappointed. My young son and I read thru the book in one sitting and found it a very pleasurable experience. It's very atmospheric (with mild violence) and the illustrations are well done; some of the interiors, especially, are quite memorable and exceptionally good. If you like medieval adventure, with rousing tavern brawls, quests thru dark forests, and hints of magic gone awry, then you will appreciate this noble effort. In certain respects it is also reminiscent of the REDWALL stories, but those resemblances are purely superficial; I found Mouseguard much more satisfying storywise, and well-suited to the lighter 'comic book' presentation format. (I could never get into reading Redwall, I'm afraid; I found its chapterbook format somewhat tedious and even mildly pretentious.) I will follow the story with the next installment and will probably even pick up the collectibles when they become available. It may not replace LOTR on your "greatest hits" list, but it certainly deserves a cozy place on your bookshelf. Mars-bonfire.Read full review
Mouse Guard is a wonderful story that pulls together some of the best ideas from Star Wars, LOTR, and many other fun myths, and plugs them into the world of mice. It is set hundreds of years ago and revolves around a civilization of mice that live in small communities and the guard that protects them(similar to the Jedi). Really enjoyable and fun stories containing great characters and amazing artwork. Can't recommend it enough!
I picked up this book for my niece for her birthday and she's all in, and has totally immersed herself into that world. As a matter of fact my brother told me that she blew through the book in 45 minutes which means not only does it resonate with her but I now know that I have to pick her up any follow-up stories that are available.
