As directed by Eddie Kamae, this documentary dissects the nature, background and significance of a musical form known as Hawaiian slack key. Kamae - renowned for both his musical expertise and his preternatural storytelling abilities - uses as his central theme the repeated intersections between the k ho'alu guitar itself and the broader cultural traditions of Hawaii, in many different ways; he also traces the evolution of slack key from the 1830s into the early 21st Century, and explains how slack key has generally functioned as a vehicle for familial traditions to be passed down from one generation to the next. The program draws from a combination of archival images, candid interviews, the music of legendary performers including Raymond Kane, Fred Punohou, Ledward Kaapana and Gabby Pahinui, and scenic shots of the Hawaiian Islands.
