  • Good entry from J.P. McGowan the Railroad Man of Hollywood, fair quality copy

At the price, certainly is good value. Lead actor as well as director, McGowan does well as a heavy, Eva Novak shows 1920s sex appeal. Of the limited number of McGowans available, this a top. Not subtle but a straight story rattles along with plenty of smoke from the 4-6-2 (?) locos and biffo scrapping between some of the characters. Too many over-literary intertitles and unnecessary humor by today's standards but understandably quite a hit back in 1927. Nicely photographed but the transfer for dvd is only fair -- soft and at times flaring. OK on small screen. Tolerable organ background music track. Some day, lets hope for a proper digitizing off 35mm that puts the power back into McGowan's strong character portrayal and action-oriented directing.
