About this product

Product Information

Director Oliver Stone chalks up an ambitious entry on his biopic resume (past entries include films about Jim Morrison, Richard Nixon, and JFK among others) with this cinematic treatise on the life of the mighty Alexander the Great. Despite his young death at 32, Alexander packed some unimaginable conquests into his limited years by ruling over a huge chunk of the globe. Stone draws on a voice-over narration provided by Anthony Hopkins, whose character is named Ptolemy, to aurally depict some of the battles. Thus, Stone shifts the weight of the film to focus on the personality of Alexander (Colin Farrell), a man who is stricken by overwhelming personal insecurities that come in direct contrast to his bold achievements. Complex dealings with his mother (Angelina Jolie) and father (Val Kilmer) plague him, as does his turbulent relationship with his wife, Roxane (Rosario Dawson). His connection with his best friend, Hephaestion (Jared Leto), is ambiguous, with Stone touching on their vaunted homosexuality via some shared tender moments. As these personal battles are played out, Ptolemy fills the historic gaps in the narrative by charting the incredible conflicts that raged at Alexander's behest. Eventually, Stone lets loose with an epic on-screen battle, which sees Alexander's troops rumble across India in another country-conquering quest. But while his minions struggle, and Alexander demands success, it becomes clear that he is his own worst enemy. With the only real threat to Alexander coming from a tempestuous struggle with his own ego, Stone's summation of the great historical leader paints a picture of an embittered and solitary figure who was able to rule everyone apart from himself.

    Alexander... was definitely great.

Best of the three Alexander's. Although one of the greatest disappointments, he and Hephaistion never even kiss, which is ridiculous for historical, known and famed lovers. Other major criticism was the absolute wealth of Greek names, which are nearly impossible to figure out or follow... unless viewing it with subtitles, which helps immensely. But a great film overall, acting and all production values are top notch.

  • Disappointing Epic

This historical want to be epic centers around Alexander the Great and is directed by Oliver Stone. Alexander, played by Colin Farrell, is portrayed as a confused and angry man troubled by his own insecurities. Stone focuses the movie on Alexander's personality instead of the historical significance of how he expanded his empire. Alexander, who dies at the age of 32, is plagued by his troublesome relationship with his mother, played by Angelina Jolie, and his father, played by Val Kilmer. In the end Stone portrays Alexander as a man consumed by his own inner demons and whose greatest threat came from his own ego. Much of the historical details of the movie come from a voice over done by Anthony Hopkins. Hopkins is excellent and it's a shame he didn't play a bigger part as his acting ...

  • Great movie, acted & filmed well, Director's Cut was a little drawn out

Great movie, delves into the youth and growth of a legendary man. Is very realistic and says true to the time period. This being said, if you have a problem with same sex relations - do not watch this movie. However, if you love History enough to want to understand Alexander the Great better, this film really explores the young man's character and drive. His willfulness and strong dedication is not only represented in this film, it is shown through a different light. You experience the dynamic relations that grow and fall between lifelong comrades and newly conquered territories. You begin to understand exactly where Alexander went wrong, and you see why the great lands Alexander fought so hard to unite are so divided today. It's really a life lesson, it illuminates how greed, jealousy and ...

  • Alexander

I Like the history behind this movie, more than the movie it self. They made Alexander seem "not so great"! And I hate to ruin it for anyone, but you see Collin Ferrels Hanging Brain scrotum! That might be a selling point for some folks...but I didn't see that one coming, and after it happened, I wish it hadn't. Angelina Jolie is awsome, but when isn't she? (Adopt me Anelina, baby needs a new pair of shoes!) Is there an upside besides Ms. Jolie? Yes. There is some batteling with swords, spears, and shields, some blood splatter, Ferrel dies,Jared Leto dies, and Rosario Dawson is pretty damn sexy! Overall: You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both, and then you have "Alexander". Hail Sparta! K. Kerr Denver CO

  • Alexander

Director Oliver Stone loves a good contraversy, whether it's his take on the Vietnam War, the JFK assassination ... or Alexander the Great. Colin Farrell makes an odd anguished Alexander, Angelina Jolie's talent is wasted in her role as the mother, Val Kilmer is miscast, and Rosario Dawson proves she has lovely breasts to go with her acting talent. But any Stone film is interesting, even when it misses the mark!
