About this product

Product Information

The first boxing game for the Genesis, James "Buster" Douglas Knockout Boxing features large, colorful boxers from a side-view perspective. Select one of five fighters (including Douglas) and challenge the remaining characters for a shot at "Iron Head." Defeat the mysteriously masked boxer and you'll become champion!

Each of the six fighters can be seen from head to toe as a referee looks on to make sure no one gets too close. Aside from Douglas and Iron Head, the lineup includes: Dynamite Joe, Kim Nang, Fernando Gomez and the Detroit Kid.

In order to reach the title fight, you'll have to win four Championship Matches and then four Defense Matches (against the same fighters) to prove you're worthy enough for Iron Head. Other notable features include three difficulty levels, adjustable rounds (from one to twelve) and two-player head-to-head competition.

James "Buster" Douglas was chosen to endorse the game after beating Mike Tyson to become Heavyweight Champion on February 11, 1990. Ironically, he lost the title for good eight months later, against Evander Holyfield, and quickly faded into obscurity.

  • Simple arcade boxer that will entertain

I have a soft spot for pre-Sonic era Genesis games. It was a time when Sega was a distant underdog to the juggernaut Nintendo. The games before Sonic are, to me at least, the purest Genesis games. If you have no idea what that means, don’t worry, either do I. Buster Douglas Boxing is one of these games. It is actually a port from an arcade game that I am too lazy to look up. It is an obvious attempt to capitalize on the man who defeated Mike Tyson and since Tyson had his own boxing game on the NES, it showed that Sega was willing to tangle with Nintendo. Playing both Buster Douglas Boxing and the arcade version, the graphical difference is almost negligible. The arcade might be a little more detailed and colorful, but most probably won’t notice a big difference. The sprites are ...
