I grew up in a house full of Beatles albums in the 70's. I knew the story before I was 10. So when this movie was originally released I thought it was a fantastic take on the career of the actual Beatles. Nowadays I respect the film even more for many reasons, one reason being the music. It's so well written and performed that I actually wonder if it's not a bit better than the original song it's spoofing on. This is because not only has humor been added but also another take on what in the heck the Beatles were nonsensically talking about lyrically anyway, especially in the later years. These songs definitely contain those ideas (with additional weirdness) as well...plus whole new element. It is parody, but in a brilliant and respectful way. It's like getting all new Beatles songs for your collection, but yet they are similar to the classics you loved the most. This is not a Weird Al type of parody where the song is exact and a catchy chorus has a letter or changed. These guys would parody 3 Beatles styles into one song musically and lyrically. So you find yourself trying to figure out exactly which tunes are being drawn from, it's amazing if you're familiar with the originals. The story is good, I felt the guru character was lacking. I cried tears of joy when I saw Nasty kick a person off the roof during the Get Up and Go rooftop performance. This is so well done in every way I would highly recommend it, unfortunately most people these days wouldn't understand. "Do I Have to Spell it Out"???Read full review

I watched this when it first came out. I'd seen the skit on SNL and was not disappointed when a complete film was made of it. If you are a Beatles fan, you would definitely be a Rutles fan. It is by far the most sincere form of flattery I've seen on the fab four. They loved it too! George is even in it. The best comics of our day were involved in the production, both british and american. If you loved Saturday Night Live with Belushi, Ackroid, & Murray, along with Idle and Innes from Monty Python, you'd love this! It's a great spoof!

This film is an absolute must for Beatle fans - you will laugh until you cry. If you are not a Beatles fan then you probably wouldn't be interested. The song parodies are really spot on. Anyone even moderately familiar with the Beatles story will be laughing at all the jokes. Highly recommended.
