About this product

Product Information

Billy Wilder's THE APARTMENT blends his customary harsh cynicism with a humane streak that appears only fleetingly in his films. It stars Jack Lemmon as C.C. Baxter, an office clerk who curries favor with the executives in his office by giving them the key to his small apartment for the odd afternoon dalliance. Among them his is his callous boss, J.D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray), who Baxter eventually learns is using his place to sleep with Miss Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), the sweet elevator operator the clerk has loved from afar. When Sheldrake coldly dumps the vulnerable young woman, she tries to commit suicide, but is saved by the intervention of Baxter. As the clerk lovingly nurses the young woman back to health he begins to realize, with the help of epigrammatic neighbor Dr. Dreyfuss (Jack Kruschen), exactly how much of a fool he has been. Wilder brilliant depiction of the average American office as a place of brutality, coldness, and alienation conjure up Kafka and Marx. The director seduces the audience into what appears to be an unusually frank sex comedy, but turns the tables in displaying the consequences of the executive's cold indifference. Lemmon and MacLaine both give career performances and MacMurray is memorable as the blandly smiling snake.

    A Great Movie!

I cannot say enough positive words about this movie. The acting is fabulous. The characters are engaging. The direction is fantastic. The whole thing from beginning to end is just wonderful. I cry like an idiot. Omg. I must be getting to sentimental for my own body. Shirley MacLaine is soooo good. Javk Lemmon is just super. Fred MacMurray is a complete piece of work. This movie has catapulted itself into my TOP TEN movies of all time. I thought my top ten was a closed deal. But the I saw this. You'll thoroughly enjoy this movie. A black and white classic which by the way WON five Oscars. Enjoy it!!!

  • This 1960 Best Picture Stands the Test of Time

Before sexual harassment in the workplace was illegal, this movie cashed in on what it was like. Poor C. C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) has an apartment in downtown Manhattan that all of his bosses use for their daily or weekly trysts. In fact, he is so busy making reservations for his apartment that he barely has time to do his work. But Baxter doesn't mind "leasing" his apartment and having to work overtime because he is getting promotions at work that he wouldn't be entitled to otherwise. But when this shy young man develops a crush on the cute elevator operator in the building, Fran Kubilek (Shirley Mac Laine), he starts to have second thoughts because he can never invite her over. And then he figures out that Fran is already the mistress of his big boss, Mr. Sheldrake (Fred Mac Murray). ...

  • If you've never seen in, now's the time--

This is one of those classic movies many people know and love, and those who don't will want to play catch-up for sure! It is one of Billy Wilder's best films. The movie stars a young Shirley MacClaine as a young secretary in a firm who's having an affair with her married boss, played by Fred MacMurray. (Keep in mind, this was VERY unconventional at the time it was filmed.) As you can imagine, promises roll off this guy's tongue left and right, never to come to fruition. As other people enter the picture, MacClaine's character realizes that the apartment itself is not a sacred haven for the two of them, and in fact is used by others for a similar purpose. The movie is well-directed, acted, and still relevant. This was ground breaking at the time, and it is still appealing today.

  • Jack and Shirley create wonderful "chemistry"

The Apartment is an engaging story. Jack Lemon's gestures and verbal responses create a very funny yet believable character. The plot is unique. The wide-angle filming adds meaning and impact. I plan to watch this wonderful film again soon.

  • One of my favorites

One of my favorite movies. Jack Lemmon; Shirley MacLaine and Billy Wilder. How can you go wrong. Also, love that it was filmed in B&W.
