    Xeon upgrade for x99 Workstation!

Used this Xeon E5-2690v3 to upgrade an i7 workstation (i7-6850K) and this was a good choice. Easy -drop in replacement for the i7. Nice multi-thread performance bump from Cinebench R15, Xeon was 1827, vs i7 at 1144, so about 60% upgrade for $220 delivered. Single thread took a modest hit (Xeon=131 vs i7=162), but I only ocassionaly game so not too painful. Very good value for multi-thread and VMs based workstations. PROS: 12 Core / 24 threads allows much better multi-tasking, especially for VMs (Virtualbox) Decent cache at 30MB/L3 to keep cores fed Good thermal perf, Noctua D15 keeps the thing below 60c even under massive loads Easy setup in Gigabyte x99 BIOS CONS: Limited overclocking (ok -its a Xeon) x99 platform is out of production so support will be drying up

  • An Intel Xeon in a Gigabyte socket 2011-3 motherboard.

12 Core processor that is fast enough as single thread to use for ordinary tasks yet performs 24 thread tasks like video encoding that reduces the time taken.

  • Fantastic deal!

This CPU is a Monster. It crushes x265 encodes. All 12 cores (24 Threads) run at up to 3100Mhz when needed for extraordinary multi core zoom. 2 cores will run Turbo up to 3500Mz making it also respectable for games. Nothing fazes this thing. It does everything, all at the same time!

  • Good so far as a grade A chip should.

It is to early to know, but so far it has performed well.
