About this product

Product Information

André de Toth's remake of MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM is one of the first and best 3-D (stereoscopic) feature films, an alternative technology (like Cinemascope, Cinerama) used by 1950s directors attempting to compete with the new threat of television. Professor Jarrod (Vincent Price) is a devoted wax figure sculptor for his museum in 1910s NYC. When his financial partner, Sidney Wallace (Paul Cavanagh), demands more sensational exhibits to increase profits, Jarrod refuses. The vengeful Wallace torches the museum, leaving Jarrod for dead. Miraculously, Jarrod survives (though his hands and legs are rendered useless) and builds a new House of Wax with help from threatening deaf-mute sculptor, Igor (Charles Bronson). The museum's popular "Chamber of Horrors" showcases recent crimes like the murder of Wallace, a victim of a cloaked, disfigured killer along with his fiancée, Cathy (Carolyn Jones). When Cathy's friend, Sue (Phyllis Kirk), visits the museum she makes a discovery that leads to the horrifying truth behind the House of Wax. With gasp inducing (and tongue-in-cheek) 3-D scenes like the museum fire, paddleball man, and can-can girls, de Toth creates an atmospheric film which stands up as a horror classic in 2-D as well.

A Good Old Fashioned Wholesome 1950's Horror Movie!

I purchased this DVD to play at a Halloween Party. What could be better than a Vincent Price monster movie Co-Starring "Charles Buchinsky" AKA Charles Bronson, after the 1950's Red Scare and His agent suggested a name change so as not to arouse any suspicion that he might be a "Commie". Give me a break! But they had their conspiracy theorists back then too! It's a Fun movie with the disfigured madman on a rampage to get revenge for those who he deemed responsible for destroying his first Wax figure gallery. Also Co-starring a young Carolyn Jones (Addam's family's Morticia). A Great old fashioned wholesome American Horror film form the 1950's!

  • Fantastic DVD--you get 2 movies!

I bought the DVD because I loved the Vincent Price version called "House of Wax" (1953). I did not know that I would get "Mystery of the Wax Museum" on the flip side (1933). Both movies are of excellent quality and better than the 2005 version that I believe is also called "House of Wax". I would say that this DVD is one of the best we own. The 1953 version is our favorite, but when you consider that the 1933 version was made when a lot of technology was not in place, it really gains a lot of points. The 1933 version is in original color and understandable despite supposed microphone problems. Both movies are very precious and delightful.

  • One Of Vincent Price's Gems

This is one of my favorite's with Vincent Price, along with House of Usher, and Pit and Pendulum. This film is in color, and it includes some film from 1933 on the other side. It came in a keep-case, and arrived in great condition. If your a classic horror fan you will love this revenge tale.

  • Price is Priceless

Have nothing to do on a weekend/day night? Grab a Price DVD, cook some popcorn, grab the remote and enjoy! There is something about this actor that you can't put into words - he was ahead of his time. I was watching this in my VCR and a quarter of the way through, the tape got stuck in the machine. I had to buy the DVD to see what happened (you get hooked). I have seen five of his movies so far and have enjoyed each and every one of them. I can finally watch a "scary movie" without closing my eyes, blocking my ears and muting the sound! (I guess I'm kind of a `fraidy cat where scary/horror movies are concerned). Grab a few of Vincent Price's movies and get hooked - I did!

  • Original Vincent Price's House of Wax...truly a classic....great addition to my DVD library

this was a gift...recipient was thrilled...original cost abit more than I had wanted to spend...yet they worked with me... ended up as a great value and deal for me...no complaints in the least... will be a repeat buyer
