For Me and My Gal (1942) was Gene Kelly's first film, and he gave his career a strong start with this enjoyable movie. Judy Garland, already a huge star, offered him plenty of tips and encouragement throughout the shoot. The two make an excellent pair who would be reunited for two later films, The Pirate (1948) and Summer Stock (1950). (They were supposed to star together in Easter Parade, but Kelly injured his ankle and was replaced by Fred Astaire.) Kelly's Harry Palmer is a vaudevillian who dreams of playing the Palace in New York. It's a character not much different from his title role in Pal Joey on Broadway, the performance which enticed Hollywood to sign Kelly. He teams up with Garland for a new act, and the two begin their rise through the ranks of vaudeville. The scene when ... The preview audiences responded badly to the original ending of the film, objecting to Kelly's cowardice when he must choose between serving his country and serving his own interests as a performer and lover. They didn't want a coward to win the girl. M-G-M ordered additional scenes be shot, making Kelly a hero who thus deserves happiness. The resulting disjointedness of the last half hour of the movie is awkward, but the film is nevertheless enjoyable, particularly the scenes between Garland and Kelly.

Brilliant film on an awesome DVD with great special features! The DVDs of Judy Garland's films always come with great bonuses. Don't be fooled by British releases like I was because they only give you the bare bones editions without any special features or even scene selections! Buy American instead! This comes with Judy's first movie 'Every Sunday' which also stars Deanna Durbin. If you love Judy and Deanna (as I do) then you will want to see this. It has been beautifully restored and looks and sounds great. The DVD also comes with another short Judy did called 'La Fiesta De Santa Barbara'. Judy sings a song with her sisters. 'La Fiesta' is bad but seeing Judy sing with her sisters is nice. They don't have enough screentime and Judy is clearly the most talented and beautiful but it's ...
